The Harsh Reality of Design?

I was accepted to CMU early decision as a prospective creative writing major. I originally intended that my second major would be Human-Computer Interaction; however, I also think I'd love to minor in Design.

Obviously I'm not insane enough to have two majors and a minor, so I'd like to know-- what are the realities of a minor in Communication Design? Is the work unmanageable? Is a portfolio required to take up a minor? (Not that it'd be difficult to put one together, since I do a lot of work with art as it is.) Does anyone know if Design is really worth all the toil?

My ds did ME and HCI. He had some design classes in HCI. If I remember HCI is very selective and is an option only as a second major for undergrads, and only a full candidate in the junior year. Get to know your advisors very well.

From what I've been told, though, HCI focuses mostly on programming design, interface, that type of thing-- pretty much the complete opposite of Communication Design courses. I'm just wondering what the course load is like for both.

Your course load(s) will depend on how you manage your time and efforts. Some find this difficult and some will find it not so difficult.

DS did internships where one project was a communication design problem and another project was a computer input-feedback problem.

Have fun at CMU-Pittsburgh

… oh god… totally forgot I posted this. Back in the day.

Dear me of March 2009: yes, you are.

Kate…so funny to see that but also congrats in following such an unusual and tough path!
