The House on Sugar Beach

Has anyone else read this? I thought it was pretty good, despite the numerous grammatical/spelling mistakes (which you probably wouldn't have noticed unless you're a grammar Nazi like me).

I’m planning on reading it on the plane. My summer reading list is already pretty lengthy as is ;)

I know what you mean. I take it that most of you guys have NOT read it, then? :P

is that the common reading for this year?

I suppose so? That’s the book that they sent in our welcome packages, about a month or so ago.

then it is… our year they didnt send anything and no one did the “assigned reading”

I’m about halfway through. I think I noticed a few gramatical errors too
I know a lot of people aren’t reading it because we never get tested or anything, but it’s a pretty good, easy book so I’m planning on finishing it.

a lot of people now do actually do the common reading. Greg Mortensons Three Cups of Tea was last year and was very popular.

I think the whole program has improved compared to 3 years ago

I’m definitely going to read it, but probably in August because I have short-term memory when it comes to remembering details in books.

I think it is VERY COOL that the author is coming to visit in September… I want to meet her when she comes!

I liked it and it reminded me vaguely of kiterunner. I liked how Cooper’s very honest to the reader and doesn’t try to hide her thoughts from the reader (she shows her human side and doesn’t try to fake it).
I actually had nothing better to do during the final two weeks of school, so I brought it and read it in class when I had time.

The program has definitely improved since three years ago, Antarius, and continues to do so. I finished reading The House at Sugar Beach, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It should make for some great discussion come O-Week.

hmm… cool. its probably kinda sad that i dont know what my common reading was at all

Isn’t it kinda odd how only a couple chapters have titles (ie Chapter 3 “Eunice”), or am I missing something?

It’ll be a shame if people don’t read it though. I mean, c’mon, it’s a free book. I think it even trumps The Kite Runner because the story’s power is magnified by the fact that it is based on actual experiences.

I think I’m going to read it on the plane and during my layover time, which is like 6 hours. I hope I like because, as I recall, we have a chance to meet the author in September, right?!

dunno… Khaled Hosseini is amazing…

Last year’s group (who read “Three Cups of Tea”) got to meet the author. I don’t know if that happens every year.

@BerkeleyMom:

The author of this year’s summer reading, The House on Sugar Beach, will also be visiting Rice in September. I mentioned that in an earlier post as well.

yeah, i think she was referring to whether this is becoming a regular thing (in the future)…

it sounds like a pretty cool concept. you read a book and if you like it you get to meet the author…

@ BerkeleyMom:

I apologize for my earlier comment. I thought you were asking if the author was coming this year; I didn’t know you asked if this would become a routine in the future. Thanks for clearing this up, Antarius.

thats what i guessed she was saying :)

no matter. we will see what happens next year
