The "I chose UCLA over Cal" thread.

Please don't take your misguided aggression on me. How am I bashing your school, idiot? Its a great school, but the students like you make it look second rate. Again, I can see why you're all so upset, I would be too if I had to live in LA.

GentlemanandScholar said in another thread:

"Yeah, UCLA is a regular LAC compared to Cal."

i found that to be a very awkward insult... and pretty ironic haha

Great find. And yes it is an ironic post in that it is the opposite of its literal meaning. Irony, look it up.

Ironic how ur screename, GentlemanandScholar, indicates nothing else than the fact that u are acting like a kid. Let's face it, how can u possibly win this argument in a UCLA board? You're pretty dumb to be wasting your time here. So shoo... go away.

ONE of the reason I picked UCLA over Cal is that I get the impression some of the people who go to Cal go there simply for the prestige. This may be my baised view, and you can argue all you want, but I think that Cal got its prestige MAINLY from its Chemistry and Engineering departments. All you others are just there for the "label" that goes on your diploma. The more time passes, the more I think this is true.

Well, westow, you are free to voice your opinion. Thanks for calling me dumb. You are a real grown-up. Maybe people go to Cal for the prestige, I'm sure there are a couple, but I have to disagree with you that Cal is only known for chem and engineering. Just look at the rankings. Cal is pretty darn good in every catergory. As is UCLA, but you guys don't want to hear about that, all you care about is how people view your school. You don't care if UCLA is better than Cal, you just care that people think its better. That, in my mind, is being a prestige whore.

Look guys, this is not doing anyone any good. I'm going to come out and say it with a straight face: Cal has more prestige.

I'm sorry everyone, but as much as I love UCLA in every way possible, I cannot deny that Cal is still more prestigious a school. UCLA is very very close, and the difference is often imperceptible in many circles, but if you really get down to it, Cal has more prestige.

I think all you need to do is look at the number of members of the National Academy of Arts and Science (often considered a more meaningful measure of scientific and academic excellence than Nobels) to tell what a powerhouse school Cal is- 169. UCLA has 63. That's an extremely big difference in terms of "peer" prestige. Now, I agree with my professor who said that there is a lot of politics involved, but 169 is still very noticeable. Columbia, one of the finest private universities, has 129.

That tells you a bit about how amazing Cal is.

Et tu brute?

Just cuz you say it UCLAri, and you attend UCLA, doesn't make it so. It is your opinion and not the gospel.

Finally, UCLAri, someone sane on this board, someone who didn't drink the koolaid. As for the rest of you, keep on keepen on, ya loonies!

exilio,

This is not an issue of me having gone to UCLA. This has to do with cold, hard, quantifiable fact: Berkeley has more of the makings of prestige than UCLA. Look at Berkeley's grad programs, how many professors nationwide come out of Cal, how many undergrads go on to top PhD programs.

I love UCLA more than 90% of the people on this board, and probably you, but there's a point where we reach absurdity here.

GentlemanandScholar, get out to the real world already. Go to China and ask people who know about Cal, what they THINK it's famous for. Will they say "yeah Cal has good English Major?" No. And I KNOW ppl from my school who are going to Cal simply for the prestige. I know someone who admitted that they are simply going for the prestige. I know people who don't know anything about Cal except for its prestige and therefore is going. I know people who do not want to go to Cal but go because of its prestige. So, I think you are GREATLY exaggerating when you say theres a "couple" who simply go there for the prestige.

I also know a lot of people who is going to UCLA over Cal!! This SHOWS that the students at both schools are equally capable in whatever they are pursuing.

And why have you been arguing here from 6 pm till now? I come back in 3 hours and I still find you here. Are you in luv with UCLA that u r posting on this board? Yes, I call you dumb because I have common sense not to go to Cal's board and bash Cal. And let's get this straight too, do you ACTUALLY go to Cal? If you do, you certainly DONT act like a Cal student. I didn't say I was a grown-up but I dont go trolling around either; I'm still a kid so I can do whatever I want. But please don't go around making a fool out of urself. I laugh everytime I see your screename and what you say.

I'm an '09 Bruin and I chose UCLA over Cal so don't expect me not to have school pride. =)

oh yeah and we r talking about undergrad, which is not that important. So unless u r a Cal graduate student or something you can't really make a good argument. Would u go to a university which has the SAME ungrad program as bUrkeley except it's name was something else? Probably not.

Westow,

Every program I've looked into for grad school has reinforced one fact in my mind: Cal is consistently better at placing its grads into top PhD, MA, and professional school programs. How is that not arguably a sign of prestige?

One thing that broke my heart as I looked into getting my PhD for poli sci was this: Every CV that was from a UC student at top 10 programs was a Cal undergrad.

This reminds me of one of those things where you find how many times George Bush says "terrorism" in his speech. The following is all said by GentlemanandScholar:
"Facts are facts, Cal has more prestige."
"Your school is not as prestigious as mine"
"but you posted that Cal doesn't have as much prestige as UCLA"
"but if Cal does't have as much prestige as UCLA"
"I don't know why you're so obsessed with prestige anyway"
"but since you brought up prestige"
"It just proves how much you are obsessed with prestige"
"but its not as prestigious as Cal"
"Maybe people go to Cal for the prestige"
"more of the makings of prestige than UCLA"

Seems this word is ur favorite word? Just checking..

Last post for me on this thread.

Listen, I'm not arguing that this is a stupid thing to be doing. I don't know why Gentleman felt the need to drop the prestige bomb. I just have to say that there must be an honest assessment of the situation.

UCLA and UCB have the same fight song...and both our mascots are bears!

honestly this reminds me of the whole Harvard vs. Yale debate. everyone knows Yale is an absolutely amazing school, maybe equally as or moreso than Harvard! but it's still not hah-vahd.

and no matter what, UCLA is still not Buhrk-leigh...but who cares?!

go Bruins :).

Haha, pixiedanzer...I think you settled the debate.

Go Bruins! (And Bears in some sports!)

this is from my berkeley rejection letter:
..."We received more than 10,350 applications for only 2,850 admission spaces, and most of these candidates were extremely well qualified."

my ucla rejection letter was something along the lines of...
13000 applicants with 3200 spaces. (website closed - i'll get the quote later)

someone wanna explain the applicant numbers to me? if berkley is supposed to be the better of the two schools; why are more people applying to ucla?

Number of applicants doesn't make a school better. Half the number of people who apply for UCLA apply for Harvard every year. Is Harvard's student body less qualified?

I don't believe, however, in any qualifiable difference between UCLA and Cal's student body. I think that the top students at both are exactly the same. But who cares about peers, what about the professors?

Going back to the original intent of this thread, I am happy to say that I have decided to go to UCLA over Cal as well.

I'm a bruin.

Oh, and my parents actually didn't favor Cal over UCLA. They favored UCSD over both so that I'd be close to home! (I'm from San Diego)

Yeah, right.

Woot, I support UCSD because I think it's the most underranked of the UCs. It deserves a much better reputation.
