Hi guys, I'm an international. Got a 2290 on the SAT (level 4) and 2400 on SAT subject tests (Phy, Math, Chem). My admissions essays were risky and lacked focus, but my 3 recommendations are good. ECA's are okay, but not very impressive. Asked for 8000 dollars of aid; me mum's gonna pay the rest.

Applied to Caltech, Stanford, Purdue, and Texas Austin. Decisions are to be out very soon. What do you think are my chances? (P.S. I dying of hypertension here)

^^There is a specific "what are my chances?" forum that I'm sure would get many more responses ;)

Purdue and Texas=IN
CT and Stanford=sux your essays lacked focus, those are extremely important for those schools. good luck!

vc08, looks like you were dead on:

' It is with regret that the Admissions Committee is
unable to offer you a place in Caltech's Class of 2012.'

Hoping you're right about Purdue and Texas as well. Otherwise, I'm screwed. Big time.

Thanks for the honest opinion!

haha, well no worries, 85% of the people who apply to CT get rejected. But not only do I agree with vc that you'll get into TX and PU, I think you'll get an academic scholarship to those schools. Let us know how it all turns out!

How important are SAT II scores as opposed to SAT I scores?
I have SAT I scores in lower Level 3 range and SAT II in the middle of Level 3 :(
I'm an international and it might sound like I'm making excuses, but we don't study exactly the same things that are on SAT IIs (even in math, we do cover pre-calc and calc, but we mainly skip all those things like knowing the exact theory behind the calculations, if you know what I mean)
It's just that the decisions days are getting closer every day and I guess I'm panicking :/ gwaa

^^^What schools (and major) are you applying too? It really depends on that...

Top 20ish unis&LACs.
Major: Undecided (with sub-choices between Philosophy, Physics, Psychology or Photogrphy... yes, very eclectic... :/)

Hmm, well normally SAT Is are much more important that SAT IIs. But if you were applying for engineering, for example, your math subject tests would become equally important. Many colleges don't even require SAT IIs, even the top ones. And, in the end, scores truly are only a fraction of the story. Good luck!

Thanks for wishing me luck :)

But aren't SATII scores supposed to be there to back up your grades and rigor of your classes? Even if I have excellent GPA, if I got 600's in SAT IIs, won't they think my classes weren't as hard or I my school just gives away grades just like that because I didn't show enough knowledge in that academic area?

I'm sorry to sound overanalyzing, but I've always wondered about those scores and never really got a definite answer on their purpose.

SAT IIs are used for placement once you've been admitted, and for admissions at some very selective schools. How the schools choose to view them in relations to grades is up to that university.

Thanks, guys.

I'll just try to keep optimistic about the whole thing :)

GL, let us know how it all turns out!

Thanks, hopefully, I'll have good news to report.

Good luck to all!
