The Indian Thread #19

and i and my principal will explain in it my application too.

yeah the contact details are listed on our mymit account page when we log in to it.

That is why they are interviewers?

The interviewers do not convey anything to the adcoms, except for the report on your interview. nomadMIT, you have to see the reality. Your experiences attending JEE coaching will put you among other Indians who have done the same. Your experiences staying away from family will put you among those who attended boarding school. So unless you can write a touching essay about your experiences, your above-mentioned experiences do not make you stand-out.

Hope you understand that I am only trying to help and have no grudge against you.

In Hyderabad, we have separate coaching for IIT, BITS, AIEEE, and our local entrance (EAMCET) in almost every college/school.

Bingo! I’m a Narayana student (I won’t say which branch - there are hundreds of Narayanas in Hyd) and the program name is usually “Intensive Care” (lol) or “Fast Track Batch”. (varies from branch to branch)

Well, at least you had a semblance of EC’s. Something is better than nothing.

By good schools, I din’t mean Philip Andovers or Doon Schools. I meant “good” in the relative sense i.e. compared to sitting in one floor for two years. Anyway, we’ll drop the good schools thing. Makes no sense talking about it.

I feared this reply. I din’t mean to give excuses or seek any sort of sympathy. That’s the problem with explaining your situation - it often comes across as giving excuses.

You personally do seem very motivated, but I definitely would like some suggestions on how anyone could search for opportunities when you leave home at 6:00 and come back at 9:30 in the night. Again, I’m not giving excuses; just wondering how anyone could possibly do anything when you’re in such a situation.

Nor do I expect it to catch anyone’s eye. I just want to make sure adcoms take note of my environment, since it’s particularly relevant in explaining a few other things in my applications. But I definitely do not intend to give it as some sort of excuse, nor do I want to cop out behind it.

@fabregas04 - Mentioning you’re in a hostel or taken IIT coaching is not for the intent to make you stand-out. At least I (dunno about NomadMIT) just want to make sure adcoms get the student’s context (which is what they say they want). None of us in similar situations expect it to help us gain admission - its scarcely a hook.

Alright then…thanks everyone for your opinions …
look - maybe I should just explain a few circumstances here : I’m not studying in India - I’m from Bahrain. And FIITJEE decided to land on this minuscule piece of rock in the middle of nowhere. And I happened to opt for the Pinnacle (or Ascent, whatever the name was) program along with a handful of students back in 2007. Ok, I get it - no big deal, you’d think. It’s just that if it shows some sort of ‘initiative’ from my side to challenge myself, something which not everybody here willingly agreed to do, then I have a feeling that it might deserve a mention in some corner of the application.
Here’s what I thought : I’m probably going to request my school counselor to write about it in her ‘school profile’ which she’s supposed to prepare, as a part of the International Supplement. Or if that seems too out-of-place, well, I’ll just have to forget it.

New ideas, anyone ?

Exactly what I was trying to say - it is not a hook.

Good then. Btw, Fabregas is my second favorite footballer. :)

But, will not a lack of proper ECs come through as a lack of initiative???

Very Good! This year’s IIT Top 10 featured one of them isn’t it? Rank 8 I believe? Narayana did better than FIITJEE this year. That is excellent indeed! Why are you going to school then? I didn’t know the Intensive care program didn’t push you out of the requirement.
Haha, Hyderbad and 8:00am to 8:00 pm kinda made it obvious.
What is your AITS rank? You could definitely mention it. As far as I know the fast track batch requires a very high score in the 11th tests to make it. Atleast it did in my coaching. I had to be in the top 90 percentile in Delhi to make it. So, the students there are expected to be of very high caliber. Why don’t you mention the AITS rank and give an additional LOR from a teacher close to you there? I’m just grasping for ideas atm.

Nah… as has been said before, most unis evaluate applications in the right context… they will obviously do a background check to see if you’ve made use of the opportunities that came your way.

@rsaxena - He’ll be my least favorite if he moves to Barcelona.

Psst… as much as I would like to continue talking about this, someone is watching us from above. No, not God; I was talking about the moderator.

Nobody ever said it was. We were just focussing on whether to mention it in the application and whether it would hold any weight at all.

Ssur- Bahrain? WOooo! Why are all you guys in nice hot exotic places? :)

But, see Ssur, when your application is compared with another Indian, or international, one with a good list of ECs, which will be chosen???

@pixie - …and I was saying it will not hold much weight. (I understand hook was a bit of an overstatement).

^nice question fabregas04. That’s what is really worrying me. Even if I have my principal put in a word about my college, they still might see it as giving excuses. But I personally hope they won’t. Besides, I was very involved till 10th, when I was in an ICSE school, so maybe they’ll understand. What else can I do??

I’d like to see what initiative adcoms would show if they sat in one class for 12 hours a day for two years.

Ssur92-Get your counselor to talk about it. My counselor’s going to talk about me moving from India and the different circumstances there and blah blah blah. I was worried that my ECs from India might seem a bit random because of the whole boards issue and the fact that I began most of my good ECs in 11th grade might make me seem like I’m all over the place and padding my resume with a bunch of activities, not showing any clear passion. I was fretting a lot and I asked my counselor about whether I should ask my English teacher in India to write an additional LOR affirming that I was actively taking part in the community etc, but he said not to worry about it. Oh well.
And Pixie have you sent off your application to Wellesley as well?! Which institutes have you sent your applications to so far? You make me feel so far behind, it’s ridiculous :/

“Nice hot exotic places” … I’m laughing myself to death.
Atleast that’s the impression that this little piece of rock (do i remember saying this before?hmm) has had back in India…nice… well actually, Bahrain is a bit toooooooo small. Just about 50km(length) by 15km(breadth). That’s it. So it’s basically just the same old faces that I’ve been seeing for the last 10 years of my life here. Alright, i know i’m exaggerating - there are some 800,000 people living here (50% - Indians, Bangladeshis, Sri lankans, Pakistani)

And when it comes to the number of people going to the West for Undergraduation, you could definitely count them with all the fingers of one hand. From my school, for eg, well, I’m the only guy in 12th. There are a few more from British Schools though.

I really wish I was in India now…!

Arun- I haven’t sent my application to Wellesley yet. I’ve only packed off Yale as yet. After that I’ve been on a long indefinite break that won’t end until I get some good shock. I requested an interview. The woman who’s contact info I’ve been provided is some Shoe Designing Company’s corporate owner or something. That made me feel really weird. What if she’s the Christain Loubotin(is that even spelled correct??) person and wears a lot of goop on her face and we have completely different passions?
