The Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

Wow.

"This is an historic day in MSI’s history. Today, the Museum announced a $125 million gift from the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund. This incredibly generous gift helps ensure MSI remains a vital resource for science learning well into the 21st century.

In recognition of this historic gift, we’re also proud to announce that MSI will become the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry."

Wow is right! It’s a great museum but could definitely use some updating of its environment, exhibits, etc.

I am not sure I can remember a gift to a museum in this $ range, regardless it’s great for the museum and Hyde Park.

That is so cool. Good for them. Growing up in Northern Indiana the trip to the Science and Industry Museum was the highlight of our 5th and 6th grade years. Other than the location of the Museum, and it’s sharing of a train station, do the Griffen’s have any connection with UChicago?

Thought Griffin had a kid at Lab but not sure. He’s named both the Econ. dept. and now the MSI. So Griffin’s funding is probably the most significant link at this point.*

Booth used to hold corporate presentations over in the MSI auditorium but not sure that still happens.

  • Edit to add that he - along with the Gates - also founded and funded at least one charter school in the area.

That’s wonderful news for such an important and historic institution.

I think that the Rockefeller’s probably donated as much in today’s dollars when they established the MoMA. But none the less, it is still a significant and great gift. Especially when you consider most of the Rockefeller gift was valued as art. Which, is a tricky valuation process.
