Over a month ago I started a thread asking all of your opinions of my (preliminary) list of 19 schools to apply to. The majority of those who responded were either a) furious that kids like me ruin the odds for other kids who are really interested in the few schools they apply to or b) highly skeptical that I could even finish that many applications.

In the time since I last posted on that thread, I have narrowed the list down to 14.

I have since completed all of my college apps, requested all my letters of rec, and sent all my standardized test scores. (To those who insisted that I would not be able to do it, I'd like to say that I DID do it, and very well, I might add -- I am very happy with my essays, and am not "exhausted.")

Though at this point it is probably too late to change my mind and whittle the list down even further, I am curious to hear what you guys think. Do you still consider 14 too many? To those of you who were incensed by my reasoning that casting a wide net ups my chances of getting in someplace, do you still feel the same way?

Hey go for it. I'm sorry but I think it's pretty stupid of others to give out such bad advice. If you want to apply to 50 schools, it won't matter as long as you won't become enervated or indifferent to the application process. I 'lol at reason a. Why do you need to care about other peoples' chances? It's a harsh life.

I personally feel that with that many schools you may not have done your research prior to applying. Perhaps you didnt want to though...and thats fine. I formed a list of 30ish schools, pro/conned them, visited some more, and now am applying to 8. Do I think its wrong to apply to 14? No. Crazy? Yes. I HATE supplemental essays!

I don't think you are crazy for applying to so many. My daughter applied to 11. She had really good reasons. They are all small, selective LACs that cost a fortune. There is no guarantee that she will get into some of them --- not that she doesn't have the stats, but because they are schools that carefully select student bodies to reflect a broad spectrum of students. Merit aid is important, too, as is the packaging of aid in general. Add to that the fact that she cannot possibly visit all of the schools she is really interested in before she needs to get the apps in. It just makes sense to make sure she covers all her bases. IF she really loved one particular school more than any other AND we could easily pay the sticker price, she would apply ED to one school & maybe pick a safety or two. But that's not how things are.

You have to do what's best for you. That said, though, don't go somewhere if you haven't thoroughly researched it. If you are ready to accept, you should really do an overnight visit. If you don't, it could still work out ... but it's best to give it a really close, personal look.

Well first off, kudos for completing your apps :D

But yeah people only suggested that you might be exhausted or not have done an efficient job on your applications for the most part since applicants will often shoot high [I mean I did 12 myself and that was exhausting though worthwhile], but they don't set aside enough time to create strong application and thus obviously procrastinate to get everything done [points at self], but obviously you were committed enough to completing everything so once again congrats. Good luck with those apps :D

Excellent job mate. I currently have a list of about 30 and it's very hard to narrow down, not to mention that I don't have time to even research colleges, I'll probably die after I send in the last application because I'm a perfectionist and then it won't even be worth it!

But hey, come April, you will hopefully have a huge list of acceptances to choose from and let me tell ya, it feels GREAT to be in power, and bragging rights are pretty fu-king awesome.

Did you apply to all of these schools early though? I know I'm probably going to end up applying to many, but all RD, so I have loads of time to procrastinate.

14 sounds like a lot, but if you are willing to do the work and pay the fees, it's your business. If you are truly interested in those 14 schools, especially if a decent amount are reaches, it might not be so unreasonable. Hopefully you'll use the months between now and admissions time to narrow it down further.
We have the opposite problem. S. is only interested in about 3 schools at this point...
Good luck

The only issue I can see is if you are accepted at all 14 then you will have a hard time choosing - most acceptance notices come in Mid March, and you will have until May 1 to choose, which sounds great but it is really only about 6 weeks. If you plan on doing an overnight at each school to decide, you will indeed be sick of you sleeping bag by about school #7.
Also, if it takes you until the end of April to make a decision you will likely not get good housing - generally the top housing choices go to those who accept first and those who accept on May 1 run the risk of supplemental.

Yea, but usually when you get accepted to a large percent of the schools you apply to you can usually tell right away which ones trump each other, and usually you'll get down to like three or four, so...

I am applying to 11 myself. Transcripts and rec envelopes are already given to school and teachers. Common ap filled in for many of them, individual ap and supplements to be done by Oct 15th. Test scores sent, too. I had done essays on 4 different themes in the summer, that helped a lot.
As Tony88 said, it is easy to choose one from the list of accepting schools. That is because, given any two, I already know which one I will take. The most important thing is this: I can order the list from most desirable to the least, but I am prepared to go to the 14th ranked school if the other 13 reject me. Don't apply to any school that you are NOT prepared to go. Even your safeties must be to your liking.

but i think 19's an ok number. the thing is, there are people like me who are very quite unlucky and maybe even condemned for life. not that im trying to get pity from you guys, but ive never been accepted to anything ive applied to

so naturally, im just ridiculously paranoid now. so are my parents. they're encouraging me to apply to 30 schools etc bc they're crazy and asian. JUST in case i dont get into any college, ill be applying to many many (but not 30).
