The Longgggggggg Winter Term has Begun

Exie - are you in NE or the midwest?

Guilt is gone for not flying d home for semester break. She would be stuck in Chicago tonight.

Wcom—well you know she has somewhere to stay in our windy city-lol.

My guilt is gone too!!! she will be skiing this weekend–

Thanks Alexzmom!! This has taught me to always spend a little extra to have her fly through cities where we have friends. Her spring break trip takes her through MNPLS one way (good friends near airport there) and will let you know the other. Skiing will be awesome this weekend. My d will be sledding today :)

Our son is taking a physics test today, math tomorrow, paper due Friday. No skiing or sledding at his NE school.

Well I’m one of the parents who doesn’t visit. And I do worry about my daughter. But we are finally going out next week for the college counseling weekend for upper parents. Daughter is beyond excited. She’s going to take us to all her classes since we have never been out. I’m also not great about care packages. I wish I were, she wishes I were too. But the time goes fast and money is short. Everything costs soooo much to mail from California.

^ I don’t see my d nearly enough, for both cost and jet lag reasons, but have come to love the Priority Mail flat rate boxes. Up to 70# for under $14.95 with 2-3 day delivery.

@ThacherParent

Midwest. In the bullseye of the storm last night. It was so cold even the mailman didn’t speak when I met him halfway (and he always stops to chat!). It’s beautiful here. The windchill is also below zero and although I know some parents think me “cold blooded” even I think this is unsurvivable weather - lol!

@wcmom1958 - we do that. There are no non-stops here from Hartford so we always fly my daughter’s connections through cities where there is family in a pinch. I feel better with the extra “insurance.” But I also like that many of her classmates fly into the same cities to connect and on her last outbound back to school, she ran into a lot of them boarding the same plane.

DA’s long weekend will be her thursday. I debated on if d should come home. I decided since I was just there, she could stay with a day-student friend. Lucky us, weather is bad and skiing will be great.

Any other schools with long winter weekends or breaks??

@Alexz825Mom,

Cate just had their end of semester break last weekend and the school organized different events for kids that didn’t travel home over the 4 day break. They had choice between a ski outing to Monmouth, a Scuba expedition around the Channel Islands, a tour of Silicon Valley high-tech companies, and I believe the squash team travelled to play Stanford, Cal Berkeley, and maybe Harker. Some of the kids did a community service project, and I just read on the Cate website that one student entered and won the Los Angeles Brain Bee competition. They stay busy!

@CateParent–Beautiful way to end the semester. I think 4 days is a great break, but not really long enough for long distant travel. It is wonderful to just let them relax where they are.

Travel can be very tiring. I think my d wont come home for these short break :-).

I can admit my d loves me to visit and take her off campus, hotel, swimming pool, and shopping. I am tired but she is refreshed !!!

Taft long weekend is this weekend. My D is going home with a friend and I love that she has developed an extended family.

Parent weekend is coming up in two weeks. It’s a long weekend too, so we’ve offered to take her off campus so she can luxuriate (she always brings homework - lol!)

Her favorite guilty pleasure - baths. Couldn’t take enough of them when she was at home. I forgot that showers were the primary resource in a dorm. So a hotel with a pool and a bathtub will feel like nirvana.

Winter thaw at Exeter was last weekend, but college counseling weekend is 2/11-12. I’m not sure if they will have Saturday classes but I don’t think it’s an official long weekend anyway. Over winter thaw the teachers didn’t assign any homework. My daughter stayed on campus and I’m not sure exactly what she did, she hasn’t had time to talk much lately. Upper year is brutal, she is working nonstop. She probably spent the weekend working but I hope she did something fun too. Her dorm has scheduled spa day this Friday. They are bringing in two masseuse’s and I think a manicurist. They’re coming in at 10:00 p.m. and the spa will be open until midnight. Doesn’t that sound like a blast? What an awesome idea. And to think that their dorm-head is a man. I wonder what little bird whispered in his ear.

PhotoOp - That spa day idea is pure genius!
