The May 1st deadline?

I have been helping a kid with the college process for the past year. She has done really well but I'm a bit confused. She applied for all her school by October. She had her fin aid paperwork in by February and for some schools she applied through the EOP program. She got into two school via EOP but one school still hasn't given her a decision. They just sent her (on Saturday) additional paperwork that they want completed for the fin aid portion. I called the school and they stated that it may be another few weeks before they release any decisions. My student doesn't care about this school any more, she has ample acceptances, but I'm annoyed. What good is an acceptance after May 1st., when the average school in this country wants to know your decision by May 1st.?

What are kids suppose to do when faced with this situation? I thought the b basic rule of thumb was that the schools all let their students know of their decisions by April 1st and then that gives the student the following month to make a determination and place a deposit.

So what am I missing here?

Most schools abide by the April 1, May 1 deadlines. That said, you obviously found a school that does not. BTW: Fin Aid is not a reason not to give you an admissions decision.

Your option is to select from the schools you know. If the school does come back with an acceptance, then you do have the option to withdraw from the school you accepted to attend the new school. Not unlike getting off the waitlist and going to that school.

Actually, there are hundreds and hundreds of schools with “rolling admissions”, some of which will be accepting students up until September.

But don’t worry about: if she has good choices that she can afford, the work is done! Congrats!
