The Missouri Conflict; Parents How Would You Advise Your Football Player Student?

IV. is in direct violation of academic freedom. College curricula are controlled by the faculty, most of whom have no interest in being prosecuted for thought crime and lack of ideological conformity. This is not a left/right issue. I don’t see them voting for this.

V. I don’t understand this 10% demand. Is it based on the overall percentage of the population who are black in the state of MO? Why not make sure that every student group reflects demographics? What effect would that have on the football team, I wonder? And at any rate, with falling revenue, the university isn’t going to be hiring anyone in the near future. Universities already adhere to federal affirmative action hiring policies in order to get federal money. Universities are delighted to hire qualified minority faculty, whom they actively seek and recruit.

These demands are unrealistic, and the protesters are not going to get what they want.

That’s what I thought this morning when they were calling for Wolfe’s resignation. If the above demands (and others) are not met, they will simply go on a hunger strike, protest and get the football team to refuse to play. Hey, it worked once.

I can’t see the football team being allowed to dictate curriculum for the entire university. Too many other people have a stake. It’s not as simple as one sacrificial lamb (Wolfe) designated to play an appeasing role.

Really wan’t just one sacrificial lamb - the chancellor of the Columbia campus “resigned” as well this afternoon. They have lost control of this university making it impossible for Wolfe’s successor to truly lead.

Thugs is an appropriate term to describe these people.

I’m sure the Boston Tea Party wasn’t exactly a tea party, either.

(Young people get emotional. Tempers flare. There’s bottled up anger. Call them thugs if you want. It doesn’t change the fact that they just did something pretty important. Black lives matter - as do black students.)

It wasn’t just the team and it wasn’t just the black players. Muslim women have been verbally abused and threatened and Arabic males called terrorists. The white coach was supporting the team’s decision. Many professors and staff and white students were supporting them as well.

The football team had enough power to get national attention and force any kind of action. The other students did not.

“V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.”

They know quotas in hiring are unconstitutional, right?

^^^^ @gettingschooled. Is there a Supreme Court decision that says that?

Oh, they know all about exclusions in hiring all right.

Well, I guess the football team is the true bearer of privilege.

From 1989 on the court has been pretty consistent on the type of quota demanded here.

When it is blacks complaining of racism they are referred to as thugs and being unreasonable on this forum. The double standard employed by many senior posters is saddening

If the football players are there on a football scholarship, then they need to play or else forfeit the scholarships. There are many other avenues available for them to protest.

I was about to mention that the blond female in the gray Northface vest as well as the redheaded woman at the end are FAR into their 30’s and really ought to be graduated by now, if ever.

A comment on Youtube identifies the redhead as an Assistant Professor in Communications. She should be FIRED. On the first day of her class undergraduates should have been instructed about the First Amendment. The reporter repeatedly identified himself as press. Imagine the hue and cry if a police officer or university administrator had attacked the press that way?

I can’t imagine why anyone would let their child apply to that place.

You’re mistaken. People of any color who physically block someone’s car from entering / exiting are acting like thugs. So are college students who riot when football games are won or lost. They are acting like thugs too.

I had to check the professor rating site that I suppose I can’t link. She has terrible ratings. This person gave her an excellent rating and commented:

“Professor C is amazing. One time I asked her for a new syllabus and she replied “what do you mean YOU people?!” I suddenly recognized the microaggression that I had directed toward her and immediately acknowledged my white male privilege in order to rectify the situation. I now give preemptive trigger warnings before speaking to people.”

Since she’s not tenured Mizou can easily replace her with minority faculty.

The student reporter was correct - it is a public place and he had as much right to be there as they did. He stated on numerous occasions “I am just trying to do my job.” I had to laugh when the protestors replied “we don’t care about your job.” Guess their agenda is all that counts on that campus.

The reporter did an excellent job remaining cool and professional. I spotted the sound guy on his team. I wonder how the mob managed to overlook the videographer.

There are a lot of mixed emotions on campus right now about what’s going on. The protestors have made it clear that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon and still want the rest of their demands met. Many feel that some of their demands are unreasonable. A lot of this has been centered on racism, but the original reason Butler went on a hunger strike was because of some other things as well.

As a journalism student, I’m disappointed with the way they’ve handled the whole issue with the journalists, especially our student journalists. I can understand if they don’t want a lot of national news outlets here reporting, yeah, it can b obtrusive (though if it wasn’t for the national attention, Wolfe would’ve never resigned). However, the local media outlets and students have been reporting on this situation since day one months ago and have provided good, objective coverage and it was disappointing to see the way the student journalists were treated…simply trying to do our job.
