I know that you say you run cold - and who wants to be cold!
But I’m thinking…I wonder what other females - bride’s attendants or MOB/etc. might be wearing…that might really clash with a long sleeve velvet.
I mean, let’s say the bridesmaids are wearing a sleeveless lightweight flowy dress and the MOB is wearing a pastel tropical weight dress…might a long sleeved velvet dress stand out awkwardly in photos?? (believe me, I’m not one to pick a dress for photos only…but this situation strikes me as having potential to be a real case of “opposites”)
Any good suggestions for a simple wrap or cover, that allows movement (without holding it on)? MOB in a 2023 summer wedding, and know I’ll need to wear a dress all day under multple conditions, at an afternoon picnic venue, that turns into evening dancing. There won’t be any opportunity to change, so I’ll need some type of jacket or sweater. Still assembling my dress “wish list”, while enjoying all the current posts to help guide it
I bought this Dillard’s chiffon shawl in navy, to go over my short sleeved navy dress for late Oct Nashville wedding because weather can vary plus it had a 5pm outdoor cocktail hour. I did not need it at the church (though easy to carry along), and it took the chill off arms at the cocktail hour. I think I used a sparkly clip earring from my mom’s collection to hold it closed. LOL - it was the $50 item that completed outfit with my $8 thrift store dress (which actually looked a lot like the dress shown with champagne color). https://www.dillards.com/p/ignite-evenings-multi-wear-chiffon-shawl/508248408
D and H both think velvet is “frumpy,” so will probably stay the course and turn to shoes and looking for something as a wrap.
We went to try to find H a jacket but it was discouraging. The Macy’s person was very overwhelmed and had very little inventory. Everything he had was slim or modern. To get shoulders to fit, he needed 36 (or even smaller), but then the chest didn’t fit well in the front—it pulled across the front. The 31 slacks was right size pants.
It’s looking like H may need tailored suit.
H is remembering why he hated shopping for suits.
We will try Nordstrom next. After that, there’s Men’s Warehouse. Our island really has meager options. Indochino is sounding increasingly attractive as a bespoke option. Maybe in May, when we are in NY and S can help.
@HImom , I wouldn’t give up yet about local options for a suit . You might not need to pivot to a professionally tailored/bespoke suit if that might cost alot more. My husband is 6’7" and the local Men’s Wearhouse was able to help him with no problem. Very nice guy that helped him with navy suit selection, shoes, tie , belt. Very good customer service. He was nervous about finding a new suit for the wedding but it was not really a problem. He was used to wearing a suit now and again for work but wanted something new for son’s wedding.
My grandfather on my mom’s side was from a line of English tailors . He made my dad’s wedding suit in 1948 and my dad looked great in it! Very sharp!
@HImom I’m sure it varies by store…but the tailor at the Mens Warehouse near us did a great job altering the suit my husband bought…and it needed a lot of altering.
H is taking a nap and we will try again this afternoon and evening on returning my dresses and seeing what we can find for H. Fortunately, we have a considerable amount of time to work with.
@HImom , A truly high quality “bespoke” suit can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Since your husband is not really much of a suit wearer, you might want to try to not pay too much for a suit he may not be wearing much again.
This suit discussion has brought back memories. My grandfather used to take me downtown with him to a cavernous, musty old place with bolts and bolts of fabric. My only real collection that might even qualify as a collection as a kid revolved around buttons. He gave me lots of buttons, some
beautiful and unique (at least to me), that I kept in a tin and loved to look at them and sort through them. And his dog was named Buttons!
Tailoring and creating a suit from scratch is one of those things that’s probably becoming more of a lost art in America. You can still get a bespoke suit but it will probably cost you!
I’m hoping we will have some luck at Nordstrom or Men’s Warehouse. Yes, I don’t believe H will make much use of a suit. He rarely EVER wears a suit of sport coat. Fingers crossed we find something suitable.
This one is similar to the dress I wore at my son’s afternoon church wedding. Also very similar color. I’ve worn the dress several times to other events so it’s very versatile. I changed into a long gown later for the evening dinner reception.
I’m amazed you can get it at this price point. Very good value.
The nice thing about buying H’s suit at Nordstrom was I was able to have them process all my NRack returns before H got his suit.
I should get the new dresses before he picks up the tailored suit and shirt, so I can again have them process the returns I’m not keeping. Much less crowded than the returns at NRack.
