The Monstrous January SAT

Okay,
So I am taking the SATs on January 23 for the 1st time ever. I am extremely nervous and on the actual day, I'll be even more nervous. My score [in PR practice tests] were between 1850-2000. But for the actuall SAT, I want to break 2000 =) .
And words of advice? Positive Advice?
Thanks in Advance.

Have you tried the famous Blue Book?

It’s filled with practice tests from the Collegeboard…I thought it was helpful anyway.

Priceton Review is too easy. Use a supplement.

Just practice, practice, practice. The more comfortable you are with the format, the timing, etc. the easier it will be. Just think “this is fun”, “this is a game that I can win”.

Wow…I like that…thanks…please give more advice.

uh, bring stopwatch. Knowing how much time you have left can really help than not knowing.

I will bring a digital watch. Are you sure we’re allowed to bring a stop watch?

Oh. lJmYEA, I have used the BB… I have that and the official collegeboard study guide which comes w/ 10 practice tests…I’ve done 5 in the BB and 5 in the other one…

I’m taking the SAT in Jan too ==

I don’t recommend using a stop watch… You don’t really have time to have to reset the thing every section of the test. Plus the milliseconds numbers move so fast, it would have made me more nervous seeing it.

success18, just do these things:

 • bring a digital wrist watch
 • sleep early, eat breakfast the day before
 • bring a thick zip-up hoodie with you… sometimes the testing centers are freaking cold. But you want to be able to take it off just in case you get warm.
 • bring 5 sharpened pencils and 2 mechanical pencils; they tell you that you can’t use mechanical pencils, but I’ve always used them during the SATs & ACTs and prompters have never confiscated it or disqualified me from the test or anything
 • bring one graphing calculator and one solar powered calculator that just does simple scientific functions; so even if your graphing one dies, the second one never will
 • look over math formulas you need to know again the night before or type them into your graphing calculator so you can refer to it during the test if you forget, but it’s better to memorize them lol
 • Just chill during the test. There is really nothing to worry about and I’m assuming you’re a junior. Listen to some music on your way to the testing center or eat a piece of candy or chew some gum. If a lot of your classmates are at the testing center that day, just chat about something NOT SAT related while you wait to get in. I always feel more relaxed when I’m actually doing something beforehand rather than standing idly around waiting.

It’s funny. Once I took the SAT, the first section was a math section, and the second I opened my graphing calculator the battery died. Didn’t want to waste time to change batteries during the test, but luckily I had my handy solar powered scientific calculator. Then I changed batteries during the break and went back to my graphing calc. Another time a classmate from my school actually FORGOT his calculator…yeah, wth lol. But I was able to lend him my second calculator while everyone else only had one calculator and couldn’t lend him one.

Good luck. Keep practicing for the SATs, reading, and memorizing a new vocab word everyday.

Thank You!

nice i am taking it the same day!

i asked my sister and she told me a few things

be confident, if you go in nervous, chances are it will hurt your score.

pratice pratice pratice! get the SAT book from your local bookstore and look at it, its better to go in prepared. plus it will give you the info about what to expect so you dont waste your time studying for pointless stuff.

take the pratice tests on the internet, there are 5 on the college board website, make sure you use a stop watch, it will give you a good sense of reality to see how long it will take you

go to bed early, i plan on avoiding studying the night before, if you have a certain hobby or sport you play, then go do that. you do want to be stressed the night before.

wake up and shower, yes it is werid, but when you are in the shower you might feel more relaxed, plus it will wake you up ;)

eat a good breakfast, this is very overlooked… it helps

as for taking the test:

wear comfortable cloths, its a testing center, no one cares what you wear

make sure you have a calc, pencils, and batteries… a dead calc is a useless calc

in the math section, do not assume you will need a calc, my sister used it just to check her math

just relax during the test… do not stress out, colleges will take your best scores, not your first ones!

GOOD LUCK :)

PS. LOOK AT GEOMETRY FORMULAS AND STUFF…
