this is impossible, i doubt USNews ships out the maganize 4 days in advance, more like they'll ship it wednesday

I agree. The USNWR online edition comes out before the actual magazine, which hits the stands on Monday. I doubt this is the actual ranking, although I must admit it looks pretty authentic!

pirt8528... why do you think wesleyan and middlebury are overrated?

smartalic: after williams, amherst, swarthmore, i believe that all LACs down to and including colgate/ grinnell, (spots 14-15), are of equal quality. when looking at acceptance rates, entering SAT scores, student-teacher ratio, endowment figures, alumni giving rate, etc., all these schools are about even. yet W&L, Davidson, Grinnell, CMC continue to float around spots 10-15; i honestly believe that this is due to the fact that these schools are in the South, Midwest, West, and NOT the northeast. the fact that wesleyan and middlebury (bowdoin too) are located in new england gives them a higher peer assessment becuase many people in higher education (professors) simply can't take a school (however good it is) in the South/ Midwest as seriously as they can a school in New England. how silly. Once again, i acknowledge that AWS are better than the rest; but from spots 4-15, i don't think there remains any difference in the quality of the school. i picked on Wesleyan and Middlebury in particular becuase i visited them on the same trip i visited W&L, davidson and found that they were better than W&L, Davidson in NO ways excpet that they were located in the northeast. the student bodies, professors of the Southern schools seemed friendlier, the campuses were prettier, etc.

It's not real. I checked the site where it was from and there are threads there now saying it was a hoax.

I hope its real, Williams is still at number 1.

Well, they will probably be number 1 anyway when the official one comes out so.. w/e.

I see no difference between Williams and Amherst.

kk19131, do you add that smiley after every comment you make? seriously...

Seeing how most of what is posted on this website is subjective bs, yep

In terms of freshmen stats, graduation rates, and the like, they are similar. When you visit though, you'll notice the difference in evironment immediately. Just mentioning that even though it isn't factored into the rankings.

If they were tied for #1, I wouldn't see a problem, even though I think Williams is slightly better... :)

Pirt8528--The USNews rankings are based on more than a peer assessment score. If you look at all of the factors, you'll find that Wesleyan, Bowdoin, and Middlebury trump many of the schools that you're whining about for more reasons that just peer assessment...

like what?

"When you visit though, you'll notice the difference in evironment immediately."

What are the differences? This is the type of stuff people SHOULD be posting on CC.....

endowment, faculty resources, selectivity, graduation rates, alumni giving.

Well, the obvious one is that Amherst is more urban. Its not exactly a bustling city, but it has plenty of clubs, movie theaters, etc. Not to say that Williams does not have these, but it is very rural. The first thing I saw when I arrived in Williamstown was four horses galloping in a field. And mountains. This may not be appealing to some, but I thought the view was absolutely gorgeous. Breathtaking to be exact. The Amherst students seemed like know-it-alls; they weren't very humble at all. The whole time it seemed like they didn't want to be bothered with me or anyone else. In contrast, Williams students and administration were warm and welcoming. As soon as I arrived on campus they began to talk to me and made me feel at home. It wasn't just me, they were interested in getting to know the other visitors on a more personal level as well. I never wanted to leave Williamstown and I look forward to my next visit in October. There is something magical about it that you just have to experience. This is apparent by the devoted students (the junior advisors!), faculty, and also the alumni who dedicate their time and money to the College and its projects. I don't plan on visiting Amherst again.

I just want to mention that when I visited the colleges, I had an open mind. I knew Amherst was a great college and still think it is, just not for me. This is just my opinion and I'm sure others have different views.

Hm Williams sounds great. ;)

“k19131, are you deluded? That its students are uniformly brilliant aside, Caltech is one of the most rigorous schools in the country. It deserves much more credit than the general public is willing to give it (though U.S. News does a pretty good job on that front).”

-Just because a school is rigorous does not make it a top school. Furthermore, Caltech is such a largely science and engineering school, that it should not be ranked with other, more well-rounded universities. If we’re going to be ranking specialty schools, why not add RISD and Julliard while we're at it.

This is probably a hoax. Evidence from this thread on XOXO HTH.com:
i'm spreading bosterly's to cc just to see their reactions
...
it's f*ing hilarious some of them are actually buying it

Anyway, let's just say that there is some significant doubt as to the validity of this list.
