The New School for Drama - thoughts on BFA programs?

I’m applying to The New School’s drama program, and I haven’t heard much on CC about how selective it is, the curriculum, etc. I know the BFA program is very new, but I would love to hear anything about this program

I know there were some New School parents three years ago (in its inaugural year, I think?) I can’t remember who they were, but if you look through the old threads (check the final decisions thread for 2017) you might be able to PM them and find out how it went.

We know several kids at The New School. The all seem to really like it. I know that someone in the first BFA class said she felt it needed some improvement but they reportedly listened to the students about how the program could improve and made some changes.
I know it is a much more broad based BFA than many. That actually appeals to me. It is not only acting - but the classes are to prepare students to work in various aspects of the industry. A nice description of this used to be on the website.

I have also heard the facilities are outstanding.

The New School’s BFA also provides less structure and more freedom than other BFA programs. I have been told by the students they have class (drama) only a few times a week and also do a lot out in the city to explore various arts and creative projects. I know they have student directed/produced shows as well as faculty directed/produced shows. They also have excellent guest artist (professional actors) come speak to students.

One more plus- there are study abroad opportunities

As for selectivity - I don’t know how many apply or the number they are looking for. I do know kids that have been wait listed or rejected so not everyone is admitted.

My own daughter liked the school but didn’t feel the program was what she was personally looking for. She was after a true conservatory which this program is not. However, this is a unique program that could be the perfect fit for someone looking to design a bit of his/her curriculum and have the freedom to do things outside of set classes. I think it sounds really interesting!

I got the impression that it’s pretty selective. You have to be comfortable creating your own curriculum. The school itself is beautiful and modern and they are very environmentally and socially conscious. They encourage acting students to try directing and playwriting. Lots of collaboration. Amazing artists in residence and guest artists.
