Olspc, good to know.

TheCity, of course the fact that Jefferson founded UVa definitely helps. Plus, it's interesting to note that Presidents Jefferson, James Madison and James Madison comprised UVa's original governing board and were the ones who physically laid the cornerstone of the University in 1817.

But the main reason why it's part of the UNESCO list is because architecturally UVa is considered innovative. Unlike other schools around the time of UVa's founding, The University of Virginia was built so that students and professors would live and learn together in an "academical village" rather than large cramped buildings. Because of UVa, newer schools began to think of collegiate design in a different way. Even Duke has a section of its campus that looks like a bad copy of UVa's Lawn.

Furthermore, The American Institute of Architects recognizes UVa as "the most important architectural ensemble in America." The NY Times calls The University of Virginia "the greatest campus plan in the history of American architecture." Anyone who studies architecture in school will come upon UVa at some point.

Besides UVa, there are a lot of schools w/ really pretty campuses (or it is campi? It's interesting how English has butchered Latin.) I also like Princeton, Stanford, Vassar, and Duke.

Oops, I meant Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.

Furman University.

if you want real style, cambridge is the way to go .. its beautiful little town, cool river, no cars olny bikes buildings are like 5000 years old and stiil standing lol and they have good food shopping etc... then again its england so youll see the sun about 3 days a year...that why the buildings are awesome... you never walk out..

Cambridge is, without a doubt, the most gorgeous campus I have ever seen...and I have seen many!!!

Vassar, Amherst, Bucknell.

williams and stanford.

Sewanee: The University of the South has to be a contender for the most beautiful campus.
1. Factor 1,300 students by 10,000 acres. It's spacious.
2. Those acres are mountaintop acres. Think vistas. Think photo op.
3. The school has architectural integrity. It is not a crazy quilt of styles.
4. There is no adjacent business district. No arches. No neon. No Walgreens' parking lot.
5. Traffic is minimal. There is only one traffic light in town. This makes it quieter. You can hear the birds and the breeze.
6. Cliffs
7. Lakes
8. A gothic chapel (minicathedral, in actuality).
9. A modern chapel designed by Fay Jones.
10. Trees.
11. The passing professor or honors student attired in an academic gown...

If you won't allow that these qualities lead to loveliness, consider these other options:
William and Mary
UVA
Davidson
Rhodes (If only it had a mountain!)
Washington University
Northwestern

Stanford (yeah, and I'm a Bruin)

UCLA (sad, but true)

Pepperdine (I love Malibu)

I also liked Harvard, UCSB, and UCSD.

25 personal choices, in no particular order:

Princeton
Stanford
Dartmouth
Duke
Pomona
Swat
U Va (the paragon!)
BC
Colgate
Cornell
Davidson
Emory
Middlebury
Vassar
Bucknell
Dickinson
Furman
Hamilton
Kenyon
Denison
UCLA
Wake Forest
UNC
William & Mary
Holy Cross

Mt. Holyoke (nominally all-girls school)

Duke (the gardens are amazing)

Georgetown (D.C. is my city, and the campus is beautiful)

I definitely had a good laugh at some of these lists..

a note on william and mary: beautiful campus.. really! no shade, no remorse in the summer. I have spent two summers there, and it can be stifling.

Dartmouth by far #1!!! Williams, Duke, Middlebury, Vassar.
