The no-news-is-good-news NMF rejection/acceptance/worry thread, Class of 2018

It’s that time of year again. For NMSF and their parents, here’s a place to post worries and thoughts as we wait for NMF news. My son is NMSF in Texas, planning to attend UTD with its excellent nearly-full-ride NMF scholarship. He doesn’t really have anything to worry about; application completed, school recommendation was good, essay was fine, 4.0 UW GPA, 1560 SAT.

BUT…even though there should be no issue with him moving on to NMF it will still be nice to pass the rejection letter window and then to have the NMF letter in hand. If he were planning to attend a college that offers no scholarship for NMF it wouldn’t matter but at UTD the difference between his current scholarship offer (AES Honors) and the NMF scholarship is $5k per year plus $6k for study abroad. So S knows the exact value of the NMF letter for him…$26k total.

So that’s my story, anyone else waiting for news feel free to post here.

It may or may not matter to my son in the end. He is admitted to one school already, in his major and with good merit that is not tied to NMF. But there are several others we are waiting to hear from that will have large NMF scholarships. No way he is going without NMF to those schools.

We’re anxiously awaiting news! 4.0 GPA (UW), but homeschooled so pretty much no one believes that anyway, 1570 SAT, I have no idea if her essay will be good enough or not - we struggled with that one, I’m sure her recommendation was fine from the person she chose (teacher from an online class she did), everything was turned in with time to spare.

She’s down to 5 colleges, only 1 is a NM sponsor school but 4 of the 5 offer scholarships to NMF’s (one full-ride, one full-tuition, one $3000, and one $2000 - all 4-year renewable). She’s been accepted at all of them.

No reason to worry here either…4.0 UW, 4.6 W, 1500 SAT, and yet I find a way to worry anyways! I just hope all the t’s were crossed and i’s dotted. I’m also worrying about having to choose a university! I know that’s a pretty darn good position to be in but now that the end is approaching, committing the next 4yrs of my life to ONE university is terrifying!! I’m wavering between UTD and UCF, already visited UCF and visiting UTD this week! I have a feeling UTD is going to be a pretty strong contender vs UCF :-/

Edit: Does anyone know when the dreaded letters will be sent out?

We should be good too, no worries over gpa or SAT, good rec letter and better than expected essay. DS will be joining Traveler98’s son at UTD. @sewin2music let us know what you think of UTD vs. UCF. Very different schools! both amazing NM scholarships!

raises hand Present!

My kid was deferred for SCEA at Princeton. A confirmation of NMF status would at least give a reason to contact admissions with updated information!

When do they notify finalists?

@sewin2music, if this year is like past years the rejection letters are sent out in mid-January and those not moving on should receive the letters by late January. Once you reach February 1 with no letter you should be in the clear, though that won’t be as much relief as actually getting the NMF letter. We’ll know more when/if people post here with rejection letter sightings, or if anyone calls NMSC to ask them directly about the timing and then reports back here.

So… who is going to volunteer to call NMSC and when to find out if rejection letters have gone out? X_X

Ok, I just called NMSC and the rep didn’t have an exact mail date but said rejection letters would go out “in the next week or so”. Sounds like the timing is the same as previous years.

Letters were mailed January 17 last year (day after MLK day), so maybe it’s safe to assume they’ll go out next Tuesday. Possible to see rejection letters show up in and around Illinois by Friday or Saturday of next week, most will likely know by January 26. Sound about right?

Somewhat stressed about this even though I know there was nothing wrong with my application. However, it’s hard not to worry about something that could be worth $64k

Chronic worrier, checking in.

Anxious here. High GPA, 1550 SAT. High SAT subject test scores. I would assume the recommendation was good. Homeschooled and worried if there are any implications because of that.

@3scoutsmom Both great schools. my daughter is interested in Nursing and UTD doesn’t have a nursing program so didn’t really consider it.As Traveler has stated its a great package and for those already living in the Dallas area like us it REEEEAAAALLLY pays off since you don’t have to worry about housing. We toured UCF in December and my daughter loved it. Amazing honors program and the NM program looks after the kids. She is very excited about going to UCF in the fall, great program, gorgeous campus and full ride !

@ColoSky moving from NMSF to NMF is pretty much just a validation step. As long as you don’t have anything that would get you filtered out (like bad grades, insufficient SAT, disciplinary issues, not completing the application, etc) then you’ll move on. There’s no implication for homeschooled. Test scores don’t matter as long as SAT reached the confirming score.

I am expecting the letter because S had a 79 in 10th grade Spanish. Nothing is on the line financially, so it is really just a feather in his cap. But who doesn’t like feathers? lol

@flatKansas Thanks for the reassuring words. I am just a bit worried about not having filled out the forms correctly as the principal of our school since it our first and last go around with National Merit.
