In my observation, one semester “C” does not necessarily exclude the student from NMF - though it’s obviously better to avoid that C if possible. What I’ve seen in past years is that a semester C in a class like PE could be a deal-breaker. A semester C in an Honors or AP class may be OK. I think a lot depends on which state your DC’s school is located in, how high the DC’s SAT score is, counselor rec (explaining the lapse in grades), and possibly ECs/awards, etc. It seems like NMSC uses that C as a way to cull its NMF list in highly-populated states. Probably also depends on other factors, including the year in-question. Good luck to all! We are still waiting in Eastern KS.
This may have already been posted, but a reminder that today is a postal holiday in the USA. So don’t freak out if there is no National Merit letter in your mailbox. We’re in San Diego and are hoping to get the good news from my D’s school today.
Good luck everyone!
I just received my informed delivery email. Looks like I’m getting mail today! Perhaps you’re thinking of next Monday, the 19th?
@kcheves NO today is NOT a US postal holiday, next Monday 2/19 is President’s Day and that is a postal holiday.
My mistake, sorry for the false alarm!
Still waiting. Not on bubble at all; just would like to get some news. In a long holding period for admissions etc.
Homeschool letter received in North Alabama today—she made it!! So excited!’
No news in NC, but we have a new principal who has not been at the high school level before, and I’m not sure NMF is something she’s tuned into. I have a feeling my daughter will just have to wait for the USPS this week! (She’s not on pins and needles for an NMF scholarship, so it’s fine.)
If DS doesn’t hear at his high school today, I may call NMSC to find out the date when parents can call them directly for this info. The urgency here is that DS is applying for a few scholarships with 2/15 deadlines. In one case, he has to submit the paperwork early because the administrator will be on vacation. It would be nice to have NMF listed (knock on wood) on the app.
@GoAskDad I just called and they said they can’t confirm over the phone until the 19th.
Thank you, @sewin2music. That saves me a phone call. I texted DS and asked him to see if his counselor is around after school. Maybe the information is in our school office by now…
@sewin2music did you confirm that they will even be open on the 19th (President’s Day)?
It would seem to me that after a week the schools in the US lower 48 should have received their NMF packages. I guess Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and international locations might not have gotten theirs yet, but most likely at this point we in the lower 48 are just waiting on the high school mail room and GC/principal schedule to get the students notified. No text from my S today and school ends in 20 minutes, so I’m guessing it didn’t happen today.
@3scoutsmom No I didn’t, I guess I just assumed they would have realized that. My mom called earlier too though and she got the same reply. I just wanted to make sure no one else was feeling particularly generous but alas, I’ll have to wait till tomorrow for the school’s update. That’s a good point though if anyone else wants to check on that.
No NMF news in Oklahoma today.
Still no word in my part of Texas from Public or homeschools
No school today. Nothing in the mail at the house. /headdesk /headdesk /headdesk
We are in Dallas, TX, today our DD received the NMF confirmation email from her counselor and to get her certificate in the office! We are so happy!!
Crickets for us still. :-w
UCF sent an invitation for a National Merit Finalist reception. We’ll take that as notification
