The Number 1 Reason to NOT post your essay here: PLAGIARISM CHECKERS

PMs will not be caught in a checker. To delete a post, you need to throw yourself on the mercy of a moderator, but I’ll bet they’re getting tired of doing that.

I had my essay deleted from college confidential and even Google. Some sites say my essay is plagiarized, some say its 100% original. Can I trust it as original. Also, if I add another post on CC and digitally signed my name, can I be freed from being accused of plagiarim?

yes, many digital plagiarism checkers compare your essay to everything already published on the Internet. that’s how Plagscan and Unplag plagiarism checker work (and many others as well).

it means that publishing your future college essay on your blog or here - and then submit it to some college - it’s not a smart idea. [-X

But a concept of digital signature sounds interesting for me. From other hand, I think it will not work for “old-fashioned” people, who know only how to press the button “check” while using a plagiarism checker.

I don’t know for sure but I would suspect that now that so many essays are being submitted (and submitted electronically) they might all automatically go through a check even before anyone reads them. Anyone here know?

I used pieces of my National Merit Scholarship essay in nearly half of my college applications (I really liked it and felt that it represented me well)… Would that show up as plagiarism in a plagiarism checker? I’ve also used bits and pieces of some of my other college essays in scholarship applications; would those come up as plagiarized? Should I not use any more of my college application essays for scholarship applications?

@GingerTea12 I used my entire National Merit Scholarship essay (with minor tweaks and edits of course) as my Personal Statement for both the Common App and UC App and I got into my dream school (Stanford!). You’re fine to use as much or as little as you please from your NMS essay because they are your words!

Okay, thanks, that makes me feel a lot better on that one! Congrats @IBscholar about Stanford!!! (I got rejected, oh well  ) What about using pieces of college essays on other scholarship applications? I’ve been trying to apply to at least one scholarship a week and I honestly don’t have the time to write fresh essays for each one, especially when many of the topics overlap with things I’ve already written. I’m not worried about it showing up as plagiarism on the scholarship side of things; I’m more concerned that the other schools I’ve applied to–the ones that are still in the process of receiving/reviewing applications–may run my essays through a plagiarism checker and have it show that my essays are plagiarized, even though they are in fact my own words. I’m not applying to sketchy scholarships or anything; I thoroughly research all of them for legitimacy first. Should I stop using pieces from these essays, at least until I’ve received decisions from all of these schools, or should it be okay to continue doing so? This may be a rather silly question; I’ll admit that the inner workings of the Internet is not my area of expertise (I’m more into the chem/bio side of science :"> ).

@GingerTea12 It depends really on how rigorously they check each essay, though I would say you’re probably safe in doing so. Even if it were run through something the likes of TurnItIn, for example, your name would be tethered to those words from college applications, so there shouldn’t be a problem using pieces of essays. And thanks, haha. Good luck!

No worries at all, as others have said. Besides, those are not posted on the internet available for all to see. Relax.

The best way to determine if you have a problem is to google “plagiarism checker,” choose one, and paste in your essay (or a good-sized portion of it). If it comes back clean, stop worrying.

Thank you for the information! I was mulling over the publishing essay here to read some critical comments…Thanks for warning!

Hi can someone help take my post down?

Plagiarism checkers can only scan publicly available. Thus sending articles via email or text massengers is OK.

I never would have thought of that.

Thanks!

Very funny: The episode of The Good Wife on last night dealt with Grace (the daughter in the show) being rejected from admissions because a plagiarism checker marked her essay as plagiarized. She had a quote in the essay from The Sermon on the Mount.

Indeed, if one doesn’t have local support for their essays, this may be a good place to find it, but I would private message a few people who seem to know a thing or two. Never a public post. But there is a possible strategy that is usually effective: the post is an initial draft. After collecting dozens of suggestions they are in position to refurbish the piece to brilliance. Mission accomplished!

Even if the essay is deleted, if the webcrawler used by the plagiarism detector has scanned the page in the intervening time, it is now part of that detector’s data set.

If you message it to the wrong person, however, they could just copy it and take it themselves.

How does one contact a moderator to take a post down???
