The Official Feb. 9th Thread

So how's everyone prepping for the test? For the seniors, it will be our last time taking the ACTs, and thank goodness for that!! Has anyone taken the practice tests yet? I got a 32 in reading (yay!) but a 25 in english and a 23 in science and I gave up on math... I don't remember crap so I'll have to review for that section.

Just 34 days until the Feb.9th test!

I just took the practice tests from the official book last night. I did okay. I was glad that my math score increased 6 points from the last time I took the ACT in 7th grade. (don't worry, I'm not a test-taking fiend, I just took it for this talent-search thing).

Of course, my self-imposed expectations tend to be ridiculously high, so I always am seeking to improve!

I'm prepping with a book and more practice tests, like I did for the PSAT.

I'm a junior that will be taking it for the first time :) I'm still waiting for my ACT book to come in the mail though..

What schools take the February SATs? (I'm talking to any seniors taking it..) Most of my schools just take the December as the last one

I know yale does.

There isn't a Feb. SAT (you mean ACT right?) but schools like Harvard and Yale will take them. Duke also takes them.

How are you guys prepping for English? Granted, I did score 3 points higher than last time (22...25) but I'm keep making mistakes with transitions, paragraph order, idioms, and parallelism. It's insane. ]:

oh yea yeah I meant ACTs sorry.

for english, i think it's really important to read the entire sentence instead of just the underlined part and the words around it. having context for what you need to fix and reading the sentence allows you to hear what's really wrong with it. This is especially true in the cases of dependent/independent clauses and parallelism. if you read a lot, or write well, then it should be fairly easy to fix the errors.

I am taking the ACT for the 4th and final time for Harvard and Yale.
You're score in reading is good. I got a 31 in reading on a practice test once. However, I received a 19 in reading on my 1st ACT and a 27 on my 3rd time.

Remember, scores waver through practice tests. I've taken a bunch of practice tests before.

On my 3rd time taking the ACT, I got a 29 in English, a 29 in Math, a 27 in Reading, and a 23 in Science(Completely guessed on Physics graph questions)

Overall, I got a 27.

This will be my first time taking the ACT. The only thing I'm super concerned about is math. I probably should take a quick peek at some practice science questions too.

Are any of you taking it with the essay portion? I am but I'm sort of starting to wish that I hadn't. I'm going to be in a school pretty far from home and I don't want to be stuck there all day taking a test. (plus I think it costs more than the regular ACT) =p

You have to take it with writing for schools, such as the UCs, USC, NYU, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc.

this is true. The ACT+Writing is required by many schools. *Harvard being one. ; )
I personally believe the writing is the hardest part to prepare for. Last time I took it (September...a first time for ACT writing for me), I thought I developed a well-written essay with contrasting viewpoints on the issue, but I received an 8 (out of 12), which I consider low. ACT scoring said I "acknowledged differing viewpoints, but failed to discuss them." UTTER BULL. that's exactly what I spent 2 paragraphs on. ridiculous.
Oh, well. I try again in Feb. ; )

Math is actually the esaiest section for me.

English is the 2nd easiest section. Science is the hardest for me only b/c of the physics graphs(which is about 5-7 questions) and the timing.

If math is hard for you, all you can do is practice ACT math problems untimed, at first, so you can grasp the math concepts on the ACT.

Definitely know matrices! That caught me on the ACT, and I answered one wrong on a practice test the day before I took the ACT.

English and Math is the hardest for me. I always get the idioms, transitions, and parallellism wrong on the practice tests and math is just fkldsjlkfjdlsl;;

Reading is easier for me and I usually finish the section with 5 minutes to spare. Science is nothing but practice for me so I should be okay with it.

Customized counter

28 days left!! How are you guys shaping up?
I took a practice test for Math and pulled it up to a 27. That was a miracle, seriously. I still suck at English (I keep getting scores from 22-25) but I'm getting better in Science and I'm still pulling a 30-32 in Reading. Anyone improved in their scores so far?

I'll be taking the ACT for the first time in Feb. I'll probably do the practice tests from the Official book to study. I'm hoping to get 30+.

I'm taking it as a sophmore just for practice. I'm not going to report it anywhere, even to my high school. Because of ec commitments, I'm going to visit some colleges next fall, and I want to know where I might have a realistic chance of getting in. I'm not going to study much, maybe look at the Real Act book a bit.

Hey, I'm a senior in HS and I'm taking the ACT for the first time. I took the SATs three times. Once as a sophmore, junior, and senior. I'm really bad at test taking but I maintain good grades in school. My highest on the SATs were 400 in math, 510 in CR, and 460 in WR.

I cant stomach the idea of taking the SAT again thats why I decided to register for the ACT yesterday. Im doing all of this for Monmouth University because I was deferred and I want to show them I'm really interested. Later on I checked collegeboard and it said the writting section was required for the ACT, since I didnt sign up for it am I in trouble?

and how do I go about getting a better score in the math section? I have a practice book my counseler gave me, but its really thin...not much.

2230 on SATs in december, so I'm hoping to do better on the ACT (first time junior).

Procrastination for the max for me.
