The Official M10 2019 Freakout Thread

@skieurope My dad says “oh, Hotchkiss has wi-fi, you’d be fine…”

wait same idk what it means either

Sending congrats to you @CavsFan2003 and others who were accepted to Hotchkiss!! As I noted last year and the year before, there are more Tesla chargers in the Hotchkiss area than bars on your cell phone. But, it’s well worth it because it’s an amazing school and has THE best 9-hole course in the NE IMHO! What a beautiful view from the top of that mountain and the music/art building! Take it all in and enjoy your Revisit! Remember to take some M&Ms!

Are you a much stronger candidate than last year? Just want your thoughts on what made
You so much more successful. Congratulations! You deserve it going through this grueling process twice.

I GOT INTO SAS

I’M SO HAPPY

@misslilbookworm CONGRATS!!

Here’s a thread for anyone planning to go to Exeter as a prep! http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-cafe/2130052-official-exeter-2023-students-thread-p1.html?new=1

Hmmm… I might copy that idea…

Also: is there like an admitted students Facebook group for Choate/Hotchkiss?

@JaniceT sorry…their loss, truly

@Golfgr8 Thank you! And I forgot about the M&Ms LOL when I visited, my dad took a very long time in his parent interview, so I played Uno with another applicant and an admissions woman. She gave us handfuls of M&Ms!

@crabbydaddy Thank you! I think I was a lot more invested this year, as I kind of thought of it as my last chance (I applied for 10th grade) and I didn’t want to go through the process another time.

I contacted coaches this time around and I think that definitely helped a little. I know for one of the schools, the coach really pulled for me (he was very clear about this) and we were in contact throughout the admissions process, especially in the days leading up to M9. For another school, I had talked to the coach briefly and she definitely seemed interested and might have pulled a little, but she wasn’t as persistent as the other coach. I had emailed and briefly talked to the coaches at the two other schools but they didn’t seem very eager and I don’t think that really impacted decisions.

I really procrastinated last year with my essays, and this year I was a little better about that. However, for one of the schools I was really struggling with coming up with a good essay and put it off until two days before the application was due. I managed to finish it on time and I somehow managed to write a decent essay that the application officers even commented on in my acceptance letter. Overall, my essays were a lot better this year and I focused on answering the prompt while crafting the essay like a story.

@CavsFan2003 we should start one!!!

Just read all the new posts on here since yesterday… wow congrats everyone! So much good news! For those who haven’t gotten acceptances, you can and will succeed no matter where you go to school!

Does Financial aid affect your decision?
I thought I had such a good chance at Choate, as I did the summer program there and had a very good interview. The rest of my application was strong.
But how did I get a rejection, and I need full FA?

For those who didn’t get in anywhere (including me)
My Exeter alum interview told me: I honestly have no control over the admission results, but whatever happens, I know you will be a successful person.

@aplusmarkweixin Needing financial aid does affect your admissions decision. Needing full financial aid won’t kill your chances but they will, according to what I’ve been told, decrease those odds.

No one but the AOs have seen all the applications, I think it’s very hard to know what a strong application is. Essays? I have read a lot of kids’ writing but I didn’t read all the other essays that were submitted. Interviews - totally subjective. What the school need in that class - completely out of any applicant’s control.

Not getting in feels horrible but I hope people won’t drive themselves crazy trying to pick apart the why.

That said there have been posts on CC breaking down acceptance rates and I believe that needing FA does make it slightly harder to get in, at some/many (?) schools.
