The Official October 2012 Sat Subject Test Physics Thread

Does anyone remember the question with the soft and rough ropes? What was it asking for?

@Injectmagic, I got those answers =)

yea ok, those answers sound familiar. yea for the ropes question i think it had to do with wave speed being inversely proportional to linear density of rope meaning that the wave traveled slower in the more dense rope…am i right? I wasn’t sure about the frequency, i said it remained the same…

Frequency remained the same and the speed increased.

YES thank you kashmoney… im glad i omitted that question cuz i thought of something totally different xD

What was the difference between the refraction of sound vs light? it was speed right?

@siddy yeah it’s speed. speed of sound is like 343 while light is 3*10^8.

What did u guys put for the wheel rotating under the block which was tied to a spring scale?

@inject, that one was strange. I went with static friction because the block wasn’t moving. Not quite sure at all about that one.

@Siddysidsid + injectmagic: what number was that light vs sound question?

i dont remember seeing that question…

@Siddy i put the speed of the wheel  . if anyone else can verify that question, that’d be nice.

@inject, the reason I didn’t put speed of the wheel was because there was only a scale. I figured the scale would only measure forces.

@azn, it was one of those “answer the next 3 questions based on ______”. Another one of those 3 asked for what the period would determine.

oh now i remember but i still dont remember a question comparing light and sound… LOL maybe i skipped it by accident #epicfail

So the consensus is this test was really hard. what do u guys think the curve will be?

@inject, I wouldn’t say it was REALLY hard. It was about as hard as the Princeton Review practice tests. Those ones have -15 omit = 800. Or -12 incorrect.

Yeah, that test had some really ridiculous questions that didn’t seem to relate at all to any of the material in the study books I used… hopefully the minimum raw score to get an 800 will be 59 or so like in the CB practice test. What the hell was with those 2 questions about the 3 lightbulbs?

What did everyone get for the question with red, blue, green light and the regions that the lights shown? The first question asked for a region with no light and the 2nd question asked for a region with white light

@williypot left those blank :(. i had no idea on those questions.

@willy…i had no idea. I put “none of the regions” for the first one and I said “region 6” for the white light.
