what qualifies as low? i've met people who consider anything under 2200 as low...and believe me, i'm not one of them.

Accepted! Over the moon about it - it's the best birthday present ever!

aw happy birthday ashwath!

Most definitely waitlisted with a 2300.
And I thought my Chicago essay was decent.

sigh

Accepted!!!

I'm sooooo absolutely eccstatic!! This is def. one of my top 3 schools!

OK. Time for a celebratory squeal:

AIIIIEEEEE!!!!! ;)

Dear CaddyBJ:

I am pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the University of Chicago, Class of 2013. Congratulations! You should be proud of the accomplishments and promise that led to your selection.

We feel a particularly strong responsibility to admit students who are not only qualified but who are ready to continue the crucial business of educating themselves. You have been selected by our faculty and admissions counselors because you recognize the pleasure—the absolute joy—to be found in active, creative learning. Our decision was not based on numbers but on your achievements and your words, a difficult determination to make but one that gives proper honor to the University and to you.

You have the chance to be part of a school with a glorious history and an exciting present. We look to you to help us grow, to grow with us, and to be part of a tradition that elevates us all.

Yours truly,
Theodore A. O’Neill
Dean of Admissions

^this is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Oh, and note that "Our decision was not based on numbers but on your achievements and your words."

I'm so happy!!!!!! :DD YAYYYYY

:D :D :D

10char.

CaddyBJ, isn't it such a lovely letter?! i wasn't really expecting it, so it was even sweeter :)

*sighs in content, is this heaven? :D

Rejected. The cost of tuition plus expenses a year is a staggering amount for anyone. At least I won't need to worry about it now. I think I'll head to a state school and save the money for a ivy grad school. :D Best of luck to those who made it! Same to those who didn't. There are numerous path's one can take in life, just because one closed down, does not mean another is not open.

Jennifer, I think that this is a terrific plan and shows a lot of clear-headed, proactive thinking on your part. The name of the college matters so little now compared to one or two generations ago when comparatively few people went on to professional schools.

Grad school is the single most important factor in your educational life and this is where your energy (and money) should be directed.

Good luck!

Rejected. At least I know now.

Same boat as Jennifer, off to Canadian University that will cost 40% as much, I might even have some college savings left for Law School!

ACCEPTED!! It was totally random though! I just came home, opened my email, signed in and BAM there it was ;)

Dear XXXX:

The Committee on Admissions has carefully considered your application for admission to the University of Chicago, Class of 2013. Although the Committee has decided not to offer you admission at this time, we have placed your name on an unranked waiting list. Over the past five years, between one and twenty-nine percent of those students who accepted a place on the waiting list were offered admission (with the average for that same period being eight percent).

Final admission decisions will be made after we have received replies to our first offers of admission. We will make every effort to conclude decision-making by the end of June. Our need-blind financial aid policy for US citizens and permanent residents will be in force for those on the waiting list, as it has been throughout the competition.

If you wish to accept a place on the waiting list, please indicate your decision via the online wait list reply form by April 15, 2009. If you have any questions about this status, please contact Madeline Wirtz by telephone at 773-834-6769 or by e-mail at

^^Same thing here, OlyGirl. I had been anxiously waiting for this e-mail for a week, and finally, on a day I wasn't expecting it, it came. Couldn't be more perfect, right?

Oddly, though, I didn't jump when I saw the e-mail. I felt calm. Maybe I just knew I was going to get in??

seems like they rejected a lot of people with high SATs, yeah?

From what I gleaned, it seems like most people who got waitlisted/rejected did not have as strong a desire to go to the U of C as those who got in :)
Perhaps interest...nay, PASSIONATE OBSESSION for the institution was a factor in admissions.

^Hahahahahhaa to the passionate obsession.

I did show a lot of interest in the school and was admitted, but I also had a blast in my interview and wrote essays that I liked. There are a lot of factors to consider.

Rejected w/ 2200 SAT + imo fantastic application (supplement, at least). My essay was BEAST, and I ENJOYED writing it. (actually one of the reasons why Chicago became one of my top choices- the actual application process. Weird.)

Interview went very very well and we had to cut it short once it neared two hours.

Passionate obsession? Me.

Rejected? Me.

Now almost guaranteed to not get into most of the other colleges applied to? Me.

FML.
