The Official Yale Class of 2012 (Hopeful) Thread

Hello all! Welcome to the slightly preemptive -- but well-intentioned -- thread for all of us prospective HS Class '08 applicants to the otherwordly American collegiate institution generally referred to as Yale. This is a place where we can discuss our hopes and dreams with regards to Yale, as well as more pragmatic matters, such as the location of particular toilets in its residential dorms. This is also the place where we can introduce ourselves and get to know one another, whatever that might entail.

Drum roll.

Let the games begin.

Gosh I feel old....it's the class of '08 applying for college already?

As a member of the class of '11 I remember posting on a forum similar to this about a year ago. Best of luck to everyone, trust me you'll need it!

Thanks Yoshi. Hopefully we'll unknowingly encounter one another next fall in New Haven. Enjoy your freshman year.

This is me:

Last week at the Taste of Chicago, I sampled some Kenyan bean and squash stew, the proper name for which escapes me. Savoring the rich taste of black legumes and a creamy but tart spicy dressing, I was reminded of myself -- through the eclectic nature of the stew, of course. Without going into too much detail (since the Internet can be a devilish person-identification resource), I harbor interests in what could be regarded as an inordinate number of things, which range from chemistry to theatre to art to history to concert music, but such is the stew that is me. I like spicy foods; the word "Szechuan" has the same effect on me as the bell on Pavlov's canine companion. I try hard to keep my writing simple, but for some reason, Latin and not Anglo-Saxon derivatives keep appearing in my sentences (no matter how hard I try). I am equally comfortable on stage as I am in a lab coat, but due to clumsiness, other people are generally not so comfortable with the latter. Richard Feynman is my hero and should be everybody's hero, because, after all, no one except he can simultaneously 1) win a Nobel Prize and 2) have a renowned and fruitful record as a "playa." My favorite composer is Tschaikovsky, because I like his last name. My favorite author is Tolstoy, for the same reason. I prefer peace though.

Well, I love reading, listening to music (mostly alternative rock), and watching Grey's Anatomy and America's Next Top Model. I outwardly loathe America's obsession with celebrities, but I secretly keep tabs on the doings of Shia LaBeouf and Halle Berry. I love reading historical fictional novels and am in the middle of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and loving it. And I look forward to getting to know all my fellow class of 2008 Yale applicants!

Lobgent, my favorite composer is Tschaikovsky, too! I discovered him as I was reading Hitler: A Psychopathic God. I am obsessed with reading, anything and everything. I loathe bookstores and any person or institution that attempts to sell me a book, each of which I view as sacred. I have a deep love for libraries, and hope to live in Yale's Rare Books Library. In regards to intended major or life, I have absolutely no idea. My taste varies tremendously (seriously, I have both Britney Spears and SOAD on my iPOD) and decisiveness is not one of my strong points, along with singing. I can, however, dance in public without hearing a laugh or a cry for help. I love to surf and go to the beach as often as possible. I have a fascination with trees that is, according to several friends, very unusual and should be suppressed.

I hope we can all help each other during this time, and that, through some magical event, we all get in. :]

@Koolmaria: Greetings greetings!

"I outwardly loathe America's obsession with celebrities, but I secretly keep tabs on the doings of Shia LaBeouf and Halle Berry."

Haha, don't we all (although I wouldn't go so far as to "keep tabs")? I seem to remember a rumor floating around last year that Shia LaBeouf was matriculating at Yale. It was dispelled by numerous sources but nevertheless caused female Yalies on CC to swoon with wi****l delight, and then despair when they found out he was staying on the west coast for college. Being a (straight) male, I of course stayed on the sidelines, bemused -- and slightly jealous of the attention from females that starring in Even Stevens can get you.

Optimization, your name reminds me of Optimus Prime (which, now that I think of it, is a pretty redundant name). Haha, yeah, Tschaikovsky is definitely not just great because he has a guttural, Russian name. For some reason, I am totally enamored with Romantic/Early contemporary pieces incorporating a bit of folk flair, and I think Tschaikovsky does that wonderfully in his music. Jumping to Western Europe, I really admire Saint-Saens, Poulenc, Debussy, etc. for pulling in elements of world music, particularly from the Orient (a result of French colonization in places like Indochina, right?). Perhaps I am not too sophisticated, but I think some of that exotic spice in post-Classical music is what makes it exciting to listen to. And throw in a bit of Stravinsky; he's exciting -- period.

By the way, how did you discover Tschaikovsky while reading a book about Hitler???

Treehugger. Literally.

Yeah, I'm not sure either what I want to do after college. Perhaps an applied science? The right brain says, "No, communications is much more fulfilling." Hm. Polar opposites, but maybe I'll be able to combine the two. Somehow. I'll have to consult Carl Sagan on that.

Fingers are crossed for CC dominance in Yale admissions. As we all know, CC >> general public.

What does everybody like to do in their spare time? Basketball is a plus. As is Guitar Hero (II). Reading is a definite. What about the summer? Does any one live anywhere culturally stimulating (as in, as far away from where I live as possible), somewhere where you have opportunities to watch a high-quality play or attend a big city orchestra concert?

Edit: For some reason, CC censors the word W I S T F U L.

hey to all!
i'm a 2012 class applicant :p
interest: international relations hardcore!!!! :D

hopefully I'll get accepted. but if not, oh well.

Richard P Feynman is my hero too! Everyone should read his book, "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" What a "G" he was

Yale...... Heck yes!!

Wow. It's been awhile since I came here.

Lobgent: The book actually mentioned that Hitler was a fan of his. A particular composition was mentioned, but I can't recall it. He was, also, a fan of Rembrandt's Nude Woman with a Snake.

Optimus Prime is a redundant name, but it is Hollywood. :]

Give me the CUBE, BOY!

Greetings to all! I am a class 2012 international with a big passion for science in general and chemistry in particular. Hope to meet you all at Yale next year, but in the meantime, let's get to know each other here!

This is so crazy. Senior year is almost here. I feel like I'm being thrust in the way of a giant pick-up truck.

i heard yale is gorgeous but new haven sucks

I also have plans to apply at Yale (well, obviously, since I'm posting here). I can't really say that I'm a die-hard treehugger, nor can I say that I like classical music and/or gutteral-sounding names. i do, however, enjoy reading 19th century romantic literature...though I'm not about ready to throw myself at Colin Firth's feet just because he makes a good Mr. Darcy. i also really enjoy cross-country...though I hate running in the snow.

well, that's not much of an introduction, but i'm excited that this thread was started and I hope it keeps running.

I am! :] Just kidding.

(maybe)

hey, i am a Canuck hailing from vancouver. likes the idea of yale. plays classical piano so if i go to yale i could keep studying music on the side at one of the best music schools in the world, which would be cool.

i am pretty sure that if i get admitted i'll be the only guy in yale who owns paris hilton's autobiography and CD. so thats unique i guess.

whoever said new haven sucks, you're more right than you know. i probably just think that because i live here.

anyway, go to yale for the best a cappella groups in the ivy league!
