The Ohio Five Consortium

This is a thread for people who attend, applied, or are interested in the five selective liberal arts colleges of Ohio: Oberlin College, Kenyon College, Ohio Wesleyan University, College of Wooster and Denison University.

Feel free to share any info related to these schools.

poeple post on the schools in various threads.

I would LOVE to attend Oberlin, and I'm considering Kenyon. Oberlin is probably #2 or #3 on my list, pretty much equal with Brown, and Case. I know quite a few people who attend Denison.

I'm going to Kenyon in the fall :)

congratulations lainey! What made you consider Kenyon?

Thanks! I initially looked at Kenyon because I'm planning on majoring in English and their English program is so strong. Once I was on campus though, I was hooked.

I haven't visited it yet, but I do hope to. I love the fact their science program is getting much better, since I love too many things lol. I've never even been to Gambier, Ohio.

The newer science buildings are really nice too, so that's a plus. I've heard good things about their science programs...I'm also from to Ohio and it was a first for me too. Gambier is SMALL.

Oh yes I know. My sister goes to bowling green, and they have this ultra tiny mall they call the small. I think being from such a big city I'll have an adjustment, since most places I'm applying to are more isolated. I don't have really good stats or anything, so I'll surely be nervous next year waiting.

Well good luck when the time rolls around next year. Where else are you looking at? Gosh, this time last year I knew nothing about the whole college thing.

But, about Kenyon one thing I would suggest is making a contact through email with your area's admissions counselor. I did this and I think that it really helped me out a lot (because I don't have amazing, out of this world stats either) I wasn't annoying but I think he knew who I was in the end. I also had an interview when I visited.

Oh, I was oblivious to the fact that you already said where you are looking at. Heh. Nevermind.

well, actually those are the dream 3

on my radar are: OSU, Purdue, NYU, UNC-CH, Georgetown, Yale, Columbia, UVA,

Is anyone going to Wooster or Ohio Wesleyan among the Ohio Five schools?

We visited Denison. I wasn't planning on liking it -- but I was impressed. The campus is beautiful. Many new buildings. Older buildings in great shape. They're building apartments for upper-level students. Friendly, mostly white students. Town is cute, but nothing going on for students there. Pretty close to Columbus, which is a big college town. Seems like a good career office and internship program. Anybody apply? Any current students? We did a drive-by for Kenyon. Didn't have enough time to stop - but I think we may go back since it's not far. The new athletic facility looks amazing.

I have a close friend who goes to denison on a full scholarship (ranked 5th in class). There isn't much diversity in most of ohio, much less in the small towns. It's going to be a lot more homogeneous than out-of-staters expect I think.

Celebrian, Columbus isn't a big city lol! I am here right now!

Celebrian, if you like brown and Oberlin look into Vassar. Very liberal/ open minded and easier to get into than Brown.

It's one of the bigger ones in Ohio, and it's big compared to other ohio towns. Downtown columbis is pretty big, especially with OSU, I mean 800,000 people do live here.

I guess living in New York, grown up in Chicago, and having gone to Dartmouth (and been surrounded by Boston) Columbus seems like a cow-lumbus, just kidding! Its a moderately sized city.

Anyway, why not Vassar, have you looked into it? Seems totally up your alley. I have spent a lot of time there and it seems like a perfect match. You might also like Skidmore (another place I have hung out and thought was liberal/ cool).

Shoot- Sorry to hijack this board, on topic soon I promise.

I really like vassar, I just haven't had enough time to really look into it yet. I think skid is too artsy for me, but I really don't know much about it.

Cool, yeah check Vassar out. Its an awesome place. Skid is more artsy, not sure where you sat on that spectrum. Also, you like Case? I am not sure why, compared to the others on your list (UVA, Brown, Yale) its quality of life is rather the pits ( I have hung out there too, the kids didnt seem to like it at all!)
