The Oxford Thread: Questions and Conversation

So I just did my campus visits today. Here’s my view:

Emory College- I came to the campus at around 8:45, 15 minutes before the tour started. It was pouring down outside! :frowning: I met two people who stayed at my hotel and somehow lived in the same city as me at the tour. There was an admissions counselor who talked to us about boring stuff…stats, essays, etc…and I got bored rather quickly. The chat went on for about an hour before she finally freed us from the inhumane torture.

Next, there were many students tour guides who went into the conference room and were assigned rows of people. I got assigned to two girls who I think had a blog about their Emory experience? Idk…but they were kind of boring (sorry for sounding so rude)…the campus tour wasn’t as good as I’d like it to be due to the rain. It felt like the majority of the time I was trying to stay dry and keep my umbrella from flying away then from listening in. The campus was beautiful though. They had everything! I was very impressed with all of the research opportunities I’d be given by being an Emory student. I liked how the campus looked brand new. They had a barnes and noble/Starbucks building! I think it was interesting and all, but the students were rather…conceited? Similiar to how they are here…I felt like the entire time I had to make an image for myself/impress someone to be accepted…idk…everyone who was doing the tour seemed so rich! Like, one kid lived in New Jersey but he goes to school in London! And his mom was like, “ummm…so you go to a magnet high school? In what country?” then I was like, “it’s in my city…” then she was like, “hmmm…”…then she whispered in her sons ear something. There was another lady who stayed at my hotel and since my mom is an overly-social person, she talks to human being within a 2 mile radius. -.- The lady was like, “I have two sons who go to Emory and are graduating top of their class. My husband owns a chain of chick-fil-a franchises…what about you? What’s your income?” I was like, “…umm…my dad is a lawyer and my mom is a nurse. I don’t think we make that much money.” She also gave me the same glance. The students I saw all looked dirty rich. I know I keep going on and on about this, but it felt so…dry/diverse-less there. Money wouldn’t necessarily be an issue (although still painful) but everyone there seems like they have money.
Like a lot. Only 62% of their students receive financial aid…that means that 38% of the students can pay the full amount. I’m use to seeing 85-90% of students receiving financial aid.

Now for the oxford campus. I really enjoyed the oxford campus. It was very nice and unique. Our tour guide was amazing, extremely intelligent, and had us laughing the entire time. The students were friendly and actually greeted us rather than giving us “stares” as we walked. The parents of the other tour-ees actually talked to my parents and didn’t look at me as if they were trying to find some flaw that made them better than me. The students all knew eachother and our tour guide practically said hi to everyone she passed. The campus didn’t actually look like some summer camp like I pictured in my mind! When I drove on to the campus a smile came on to my face because I was like, “If oxford doesn’t impress me, I’m going to have to totally reconsider my college options.” I am happy that I only applied to Oxford College. Because Emory could give me all of the money in the world and I still wouldn’t go there for my first two years. I’d make no friends since I view everyone as the same and don’t look down towards people. Well, I know this review was kind of vague…I just had to get that part out. I’ll write a more detailed review tomorrow during my 14 hour drive back home. :(

^^ I’m to lazy to read and correct my grammatical errors. I’m typing this from my iPhone! Don’t judge me! :P

Also!!! VERY IMPORTANT GUYS! The oxford admissions guy said that they received 5000-6000 applications this year and will only accept about 1000! That means they have less than a 20% acceptance rate!!! Please tell me he was just EXTREMELY inflating Oxfords stats!

Thanks for sharing your experience, whs2012–, I learned some things even though I’ve already visited.

According to their 2010 profile ([Oxford College - 2010 Entering Class Profile](Facts and Stats | Emory University | Atlanta GA)), they received 3,873 applications last year. They accepted 58%, which implies that they accepted ~2,246 students. An increase of 1,000-2,000 applicants isn’t unreasonable–and if used half of their acceptances EA, they should accepted about ~1,123 more student, if they assume their yield rate will be about the same.

Hey whs2012, when I visited oxford I had a similar experience and liked it. However, I preferred the Atlanta campus and didn’t get that “pretentious/rich” vibe. Kind of insulting to insinuate that Emory students “look down on others” IMO.

But whatever, btw I noticed you were from Houston. Me too! What HS do you go to?

you also have to remember that this year emory’s international students are a little over 10% and next year it’s going to be about 19%, and they all pay full ride. plus, any college that is ranked in the top 20 is going to be filled with super rich people. the main campus is actually better because you get more opportunities. there are also a lot of rich people in oxford (a little more than the ratio at emory but you don’t see them as much because oxford is kinda small). not that many people know about oxford, and oxford tend to be a backdoor to emory for kids whose parents work at emory, major donors, and legacies who didn’t have the scores/grades to make it to the main campus (scores of oxford is not counted toward ranking so even if they accept lower scores for some people, which skews the average, it doesn’t affect the overall rep of emory). the only difference in oxford is that it is smaller. people who move to main campus don’t usually boast that they are from oxford. I personally like the main campus a little better. plus, the snobby people in emory tend to join sororities/fraternities, and only 30% of emory student actually go greek. when I went to visit, there were a lot of nice people at emory (yea some fits your description but majority don’t). I’m going to main campus next year. I hope you come too  btw, I wouldn’t trust any of the comments about emory people on gossip websites because when you go to every college’s gossip site, they are all superficial, mean, and probably only few actually post. I have friends who are currently in emory and they are not rich (few are on financial aid), and they told me that majority of emory students don’t really care, and only those in Geek tend to think so highly of themselves. and again, this is true for most colleges that are in top 20.

I got rejected from my state’s flagship today… I’m getting worried. I just don’t know what I’m going to do if I don’t get into Oxford.

I go to Wunsche high school. and I know not everyone is that way.

Aigiqinif,

I feel your pain. I was waitlisted (how I don’t know) for a school that I was qualified for and had a 63% acceptance rate. Have any of you heard back from oxford yet? It seems that a lot of URM’s on college confidential received an email like yesterday with their acceptance decision…and someone said that if you didn’t receive that email and you are a URM, you were most likely rejected…well I’m a URM and I didn’t get that email. :frowning: please tell me that the email was only for Emory college students (I didn’t apply there).

Well the purpose of notifying the URMs the other day is so that we’re able to invite them to a special event for URM EMORY COLLEGE students- not oxford. I know nothing about the Oxford notifications and I’m pretty sure we don’t invite them to the event so judging by that I think you are correct and that the email was only for Emory college students or those who applied to both.

-sigh- Another rejection (Northwestern SESP). I have my fingers crossed for Oxford–it’s the only remaining place I have any chance.

I just found out recently that my counselor didn’t include information about my learning disability in her recommendation; I called the Oxford admissions officer for my region and he said he’d add a statement to my file, but that it probably wouldn’t have much of an effect.

What do you guys think? Do I have still have a chance with a 2120 SAT, good essays, great ECs, but a 3.1 or 3.2*?

*Well, my Oxford-recalculated GPA is a 3.5… but I have several really low grades. =/

Wait what??.. Some guy up there said that the acceptance rate is less than 20% this year??..?

Anyways, how does Oxford recalculate GPA? Do they use your grades from every class, or only the academic classes, or only the classes from a core subject (Math, Science, English, SS, Foreign Language?)

Also does anyone know when Oxford is releasing decisions and financial aid rewards???

They recalculate on an unweighted 10-point scale. As far as I know, they use all of your classes.

Northwestern. Aigiqinf…you’re a shoe in to Oxford. You are acting like me now. I started freaking out about possibly not getting into a school where I was above the 75th percentile…and got in with a full scholarship. Just relax! you’ll be fine. I’m the one who needs to worry.

Stats:

3.5 GPA, but most rigorous curriculum my school has to offer. I mean really…all of my classes this year (and most years) started off with 30 people and quickly over half of the class dropped. I only have 5 people in my AP Chem class which is the hardest class at my school.

I have a 4.0 college gpa. actual college lecture courses are so much easier than high school classes to me. Because im a study-test person. Not a study-quiz-project-homework-another project-review-study-quiz-test person. I like everything to be brief. Like for my psychology class…we had 3 test each over about 4 chapters. No hw…maybe 1 quiz. needless to say I got a 100 in that class. Usually my grades drop drastically because of my laziness which results in the incompletion of classwork and homework. XD but sometimes it’s not my fault! Like today in precal we had a test but my dental teacher called me in 2nd period from the hallway and asked me to assist her with a patient. She did a cleaning which took like 2 hours and then she left, I applied the sealants, polished, and THEN he I saw a severe gingival infection near the back of his molar and I had to find the cause and clean the gum lining…then I looked at the clock and it was 12. I ran up to precal to see that I missed the entire assignment and lesson for the day. And it wasn’t my fault. -.- situations like this happen all the time with me…one time I fell asleep in physics and as my teachers revenge he let me sleep and when I woke up it was 6th period and I missed a test and a lesson for an entire 2 periods.

ACT- 26…superscore like a 29 (darn English dropped 6 points) but emory doesn’t superscore.
SAT Bio: 670
Ummmm…EC’s are spectacular. Matter of fact, today I participated in Masterclass Particle Physics.

And btw, my school has a dental clinic…like we have clinic days where we open up the clinic and dentists/hygienist (my teacher is a hygienist) come and perform cleanings for students at my school. I switched to dentistry this semester because I was getting bored in EMT and I knew nothing about teeth so I thought it’d be interesting. :)

Decision come out tomorrow! Good luck, everyone!

12 more hours !!!

Im so sad! :frowning: I…really thought I could get in. But yet I was rejected…

APRIL FOOLS! Lol.

I was accepted!!! Woooooo! how about you guys?

lol I was accepted! Just got back from celebrating with my parents. As long as there are no surprises with financial aid, I’m going to Oxford!

So do we need to send our financial aid information to Oxford, or will they use what they had on file for Emory College?

Received my financial-aid award; it’s a go!

I think you need to send the financial aid information to Oxford.
