The Path of medicine for dummies

Hey guys,

So it is my dream to become a doctor and work at a hospital. I am one to plan out a path, and well, I was starting to plan out a medical path, or at least the basics. I have been doing a little bit research but I am getting a bit confused.
My question is can someone please explain to me ALL of the details of the medical path from start to finish. I already know how BS/MD programs work such as Northwestern so I am good with that.
I want to more so know about, what is post-bacc, or i see some some schools offer 2 year pre med programs, so does that mean i would finish in 6 years ( not including residency ). If anyone could just please outline the path of medicine and the alternative paths, it would be greatly appreciated.

Post-baccs are programs for people who have already graduated college but still need to take pre-med prereqs. You can read about them here: https://services.aamc.org/postbac/

The only way to actually shave 2 years of time off is to do a condensed BS/MD which as you can read about in the pre-med topics and multiple degree programs threads are generally advised against as the students tend not to do as well and you’re shaving off 2 amazing years of your life.

Basically the path is this:

undergrad (4 years) —> med school (4 years) —> residency (3-7 years, depending on the specialty) —> fellowship (optional, 1-2 years)

I agree with brown—you have the rest of your life to be doctor; you only have 4 years to be an undergrad. Enjoy it while you can.

(D1’s comments now that’s she’s done with the classroom part of med school and is doing her clinical training: “Working in a hospital used to be cool and fun. But it’s a whole lot less fun when you’re there every day and spending 80 hours/week there.”)
