The purpose of dream

I have died in dreams, and obviously did not die in real life. So have other people I know.

I have a dream that goes like this:

I am driving a truck. I am short, so I cannot see over the dashboard. A light approaches, but I cannot see the source, no matter how I crane my neck or wriggle around to get higher in the seat. The light gets brighter. I crash and die in a brilliant burst of flame.

Afterward, I usually wake up, drink some water, and go back to dreaming about Cinnabons. So to answer your question: no, you don’t die in real life if you die in your sleep.

happens to me all the time. i’ve gotten used to it, though. i’m usually still groggy though so i don’t fully realize it

I have a few recurring dreams, most which don’t make any sense. I also usually recognize them as being a recurring dream when they do occur (kind of like deja vu within the dream), so that’s how I find out I’m dreaming.

In one of them, I’m standing in an upstairs hallway in my house, and there’s water up to my knees, and aliens visit. Then the water starts rising and I start talking with the aliens. Then I wake up. I haven’t had this dream in awhile though.

In the other dream, I’m running away (really slowly) from something unknown around the yards in my neighborhood, and I find out I can jump really high and far in slow motion using crazy amounts of momentum. Kind of like gravity is really weak and I can jump higher and farther by “powering up” before launching myself (like a video game where the longer and lower I crouch, the farther I’ll go). Then I jump up to the top of a tree, and from there completely disregard whatever’s chasing me and just jump from one tree to the tops of other trees, covering some serious ground. I can also do some pretty acrobatic stuff, swinging from branch to branch and shooting myself through gaps in trees (sort of like parkour on trees). If I run, I’m incredibly slow. If I’m in the air, I’m unrealistically fast. As long as I keep moving and keep my momentum up, I’ll be good.

I’ve also had dreams where real-life occurrences influence what goes on in my dream. One time, I was dreaming about a gigantic indoor swimming pool (can’t see the surrounding walls) with those water park-style super slides and a moderate amount of other people also in the pool. I go down one of the tubes and land in the water, then swim around for a few moments. Then, in real life, the phone starts ringing, so in the dream, a phone starts ringing on a wall which inexplicably pops up. I think I start arguing with my dad (who I just now discover is also in the pool next to me) to pick it up. Then I realize that phones aren’t usually placed on the walls above pools. After that I woke up, and the phone was still ringing (it was my mom).

I only have a few dreams besides these that I remember after long periods of time. In one of them, something like 2-4 people who seem to be part of a government or military agency (something professional) are chasing me. They corner me in a dark room which is glowing dark blue, and I hide underneath a table. Then they come in, talk a bit, and start to leave. Then one of them shoots me, but I don’t die. Then I wake up.

Also, falling in real life while dreaming sucks. Those “kicks” in Inception are a lot more violently felt than they made it out to be.

Never really realized that I was dreaming in a dream, but I’ve had one where I questioned whether I was dreaming or not. Before I got to an answer, I acted on impulse and went and grabbed one guy, pulled him in the toilet and proceeded to make out with him before I woke up.

I had another one where I made my own dream while semi-awake. Didn’t last long enough though. :</p>
