the real best high schools in america???

just curious what u think about this list vs. newsweeks??

http://www.meehawl.dyndns.org:1080/Webstore/Education/Getting%20Inside%20the%20Ivy%20Gates.html#top100

scroll down for the publics

Lol I'm sorry but can we not? What next? Best Middle Schools in America? US News and World Report of Top Elementary Schools. Princeton Review's Best Hospitals to Give Birth to a Genius In. Siiiigh. =P Or my personal favorite, Best Time, Place, and Atmosphere to Have *** In To Ensure Kids With Ivy Leagues As Safeties.

I agree with this list for the most part. A few top publics are missing but overall its accurate.

"We found that of the approximately 31,700 high schools nationwide (21,000 public and 10,700 private), 930 had at least four students from their 1998-2001 graduating classes who matriculated at Harvard, Yale, or Princeton."

"Ninety-four of the top 100 are private schools. To complete a list of the 50 highest-ranking public schools (see page 102), we had to reach down a third of the way on the master list, to No. 294."
--- It would have been interesting to use "Top 20" feeder criteria for whatever publics made the barrier for the initial 930. Regardless, it becomes clear that only a very small percentage of schools are feeder schools when you consider the amount of high schools in America and the "feeder publics" are generally in wealthy neighborhoods.

...who cares?
honestly is anybody going to move their family for the sole purpose of that their kids can be in a better school district

^^
When my parents were moving, the good school district was definitely one of the considerations. Since I have three other siblings it would be too expensive to send all of us to private schools.

Obviously the list was made with a specific audience in mind that resides within a neat little arc from Washington, D.C. to Boston. However, I must commend them. It was so very polite of them to include a few token schools from "other" regions.

On the other end of the spectrum, I know a Fortune 500 company that would take a top graduate from Wisconsin-Platteville over an Ivy Leaguer any day of the week.

It all depends on your perspective.

ranking based on who goes to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton is a terrible way of ranking a school's level...what if a school is full of geniuses but all go to a school that they prefer OVER HYP gasp

"When my parents were moving, the good school district was definitely one of the considerations. Since I have three other siblings it would be too expensive to send all of us to private schools."
yes, they were moving already, not moving for the sole purpose of sending the four of you to a better school

^ There was a news story where parents lied about their address just so they could send their kids to this one amazing Boston HS that was rumored to have great links with Harvard and the like.

^that would be Boston Latin School. People still do that now because you have to live in Boston to go there.

I'd say this list is pretty accurate because I know a lot of people at the private schools on this list personally. And the kids go to great colleges overrall, not just HYP. But don't you like how every school in the top 10 is in either new york or MA? I live down the street from the number one school...hell yea

It just seems like it since they have good schools but technically MIT, Harvard, and Columbia are in Boston, Boston, and NY = 30%

The rest of them are in CT(Yale), NJ(Princeton), CA (Caltech), CA(Stanford), NC(Duke), NH(Dartmouth), PA(Upenn) = 70%

But yea Boston is #1 college city.

^^I was referring to this list, not US News list of the top colleges.

ah i see....

The idea of rating feeder high schools leaves a whole lot to be desired.

I mean the monopoly students have to play to enter one of these 'tops schools' with the intention of attending another 'top school' for university is outrageous.

For instance, is a legacy at Andover or Exeter really more commited than someone with a 4.0 GPA, 300 hours of Volunteer work, EC's and a major in Ballet at Interlochen Arts Academy, Idyllwood or The National Ballet School of Toronto?

That list is better however it probably missed some great ones out there.

At least they can acknowledge that IMSA is indeed better when compared to Lincoln Park which is not even top 5 in Chicago, IL.

I know some people at a few of the schools...Lexington High School(MA) and COmmunity School of Naples(FL)..And I applied to Phillips Andover but was waitlisted...:(

I go to a good enough private day school...im in the top ten in my class so i think i'll be fine..i was gonna reapply to Andover this year but changed my mind..its too expensive and I dont think it's worth it.
