The SFMA will become part of Tufts in June.
A warm welcome to all SFMA students!
This expanded relationship should be good for Boston’s artist community.
It will be interesting to see what new programs result from it…

There’s already a 5-year joint BA/BS - BFA program with SMFA. My understanding is that this will streamline the admissions process, since students up until now have had to apply separately to both programs. I have a student interested in the 5-year program, and it’s an extraordinary opportunity.
@dodgersmom - The Tufts/SMFA relationship dates back to the 1940’s. I don’t know how admissions will be impacted, but here are a couple more articles that talk about the potential for additional programs.
One potential downside is the fear that the SFMA would no longer attract as many “pure artists” being part of an “academic” university. I really hope that does not happen. In my opinion, keeping the “pure” artists is important and it makes the program more unique.

Note that if you have 6 years available, the SFMA also has one of the top master’s programs in the world…
