In terms of NESCAC, I know of a lacrosse player who was admitted ED to Amherst this year, and straight up told me that it was because of the coaches. I’m 95% sure that he would not have gotten in his own - when he was accepted, he actually posted his stats on his facebook page (“going Amherst with a 27 ACT and 3.5. Gotta love lacrosse!”) Judging by the caliber of students from my school who normally apply to Amherst - and the fact that he literally does nothing else but play lacrosse (he’s really good, though), he probably wouldn’t have a chance in normal admissions. The only explanation has to be that the coach had a decent amount of pull, for him.

OTOH, you can’t be a complete slacker…a second kid also applied to Amherst (it was popular with athletic recruits this year!) and the football coach told him that he was in. However, he ended up being rejected ED because I guess he conveeeniently forgot to tell the coach that his 3.0 junior year had turned into a 2.7 senior year (…yeah). So coaches have to have pull, but I guess they don’t have that much pull…

My son plays varsity golf and on his 10 men team is about average shooting in the high 70’s. There are 2 scratch golfer on the team. I know all the kids and no one is good academically. My question is that does it help at all to contact the college coach? He is looking at the top Ivys, top liberal arts college, and some other smaller top schools. Academically he is average by the top IVY standards (SAT 2300, GPA 4.0, top rank in his class of 1000, tons of AP 5s).
I know this is not like being recruited to Notre Dame football, but what is everyone’s experience in this?

^ Yes, have your son contact the coaches of the colleges he is interested in. Include a resume or a summary of his qualifications both athletically and academically.

Hi sheng,
I agree with GFG that you must do the self-recruiting on this one. Cast a wide net- golf only takes 1-2 recruits per year per school. D’s roommate is an Ivy golfer. I can possibly connect you for some more specific info… PM me if you wish.

Reesez – you are the third person I know (not including our own son) who had a disappointing experience with Amhert’s football coach and my son was clearly a qualified applicant without a coach’s pull. Not sure why he leads players on like he does, or what the real story is on that, but he does seem to put out some false hope.

Pomona College sorry to say and I am an alumnus. My son would have been the best athlete recruited at Pomona in his sport for at least the past ten years. He also has high GPA and test scores. Went for unofficial and coach showed up 30 minutes late with no excuse. Said he had no pull in the admissions process so good luck. My son really liked the players on the team. Thought they were a great group of guys. My son ultimately went HYP since it was a definite with the likely letter.

at MIT recruits definitely get a hand-up in the admissions process, but in the words of the MIT track coach, their vote “Is good, but it isn’t gold.” also, I know for a fact that UChicago gives preference to athletes. no one from my school was admitted to UChicago other than one guy in probably the 3rd or 4th decile with no major extracurriculars, etc. who just happened to be a recruited football player.

Not sure. Back when I played ball for Pomona, it was mostly Pomona students on the team with maybe a third from Pitzer. I had a great experience at Pomona and my son loved the school and team. It just seems like Pomona could do a little more for stellar athletes with excellent academic records. My son could not afford the risk of being rejected from Pomona since he would have turned away HYP, Williams, Amherst, Northwestern, Dartmouth, etc. These other schools clearly indicated based on his academic record that he would be admitted and he was ultimately provided a likely letter from HYP in October. The coaches from these schools need firm commitments and will move on to the next recruit if you waffle. One cannot wait for an early decision from Pomona.

Hurdlesx3,
Yes, UAA recruits (at least the ones I know that do are NYU, Carnegie Mellon, WUSTL, Emory, Brandeis). They have pull with admissions.

Do you have experience with these schools? In particular NYU, WUSTL, and Emory? I’m wondering what kind of stats these schools are looking for in a recruit.

I can only speak to experience with WashU - the coach we had contact with there indicated that academic credentials of a recruit would need to be pretty consistent with those of the student body as a whole. Recruits are carefully screened by admissions who make all final decisions - the coach could only recommend an athlete, but no guarantee. However, at all schools, this may vary from one sport to another.

Am I allowed to contact Divisions 3 coaches, just send in some of my times and info? I just finished Sophomore year. I want to put my name out there for a few schools I may be interested in running track for.

hurdles, ya you are allowed to contact coaches. Some schools make you wait until you are a junior to contact them (his is kind of debatable now that you are in between the two years) Does anyone know if it is a dead period in recruiting right now?

Recruiting materials: You may receive printed materials any time.

Telephone calls: No limit on number of calls or when they can be made by the college coach. You may make calls to the coach at your expense.

Off-campus contact: A college coach may begin to have contact with you and your parents/legal guardians off the colleges campus after your junior year.

Unofficial visits: You may make an unlimited number of unofficial visits any time.

Official visits: You may make official visits starting the opening day of classes your senior year. You may make only one official visit per college.

I was told the same things by MIT, Claremont-MckEnna, Amherst, Williams, and Swarthmore for track/xc. They all said that they have some weight, but not too much. However, each of these coaches told me that they send a list of recruits to the admissions department, and approx 50% of these recruits are admitted into the school. I don’t know if I am being lied to, but they made it seem like I was already in.

Do you guys think I will get in?
