Hello everyone, I am an international student “F-1 student,” just received my green card, but the thing the semester started almost 3 months now and I did not pay my tuition and fees yet. Would I pay as resident student? and can I apply for FASFA or it’s too late?
You can complete a fafsa now for the 2018-2019 school year, but I’m not sure it’s retroactive for the bill you didn’t pay for fall.
Re: “resident tuition”…are you attending a public university? If so, getting a green card does not give you instate tuition status, if that is what you are asking.
I think your bigger issue is…you need to pay the fall bill. Your school might not even let you register for the next term if you have an outstanding bill.
You should probably go and make an appointment with FA if you really haven’t paid any bills. What state and which school? How long have you been in the USA and how many years of HS? These things might have some nuance as to each schools’ and states’ rules. Like as not nothing will affect the bills your already owe.
Yes, you can now file FAFSA as you have a resident status. Yes, it will be available for this semester. If you qualify for a Pell grant, you will get it and you will be eligible for a loan for this semester and next. However, FAFSA doesn’t change your bill. The school may not now, or in the future, give you an instate rate. The green card is a federal document. Most states have requirements to qualify for an instate rate, like graduating from a hs in the state, parents establishing residency, you establishing state residency.
You need to make arrangements to pay the bill. They will drop your registration for spring if you don’t.
