Hi there,
I’ll be a freshman this fall on the Mountain (I’m so excited!!) My question is regarding the student enforced dress policy.
To what extent do most gents dress up? I would imagine shorts/khakis, a dress shirt, and boat shoes at the least. How about ties, blazers, and/or sports coats?
I understand that rush during the spring also influences how guys dress at Sewanee.
Thanks
Hey, I’m a junior at Sewanee so i can help with this one. The “dress code” that guys usually follow to class is pretty flexible depending on how much you like to dress up. For example, I usually just wear a collared shirt with khakis and sneakers to class, but some people like to wear a tie or blazer if they’re on the dressier side of things. Also, a lot of people will dress up more for the first day of class of a semester. And yes, people who participate in rush the second semester usually wear a coat and tie to class while they’re pledging.
Hope this helps! You’ve got a lot to be excited about in the next couple of months.
This topic comes up somewhat regularly. D will be a sophomore next year. According to her, at least for the female students, things are fairly dressy for the first few weeks, and then become more casual when the fall weather starts to change. A few events, such as the signing of the honor code at the beginning of freshman year, are very dressy.
Once pledging begins in the spring, the guys frequently wear coat & tie.
Regarding your earlier thread, the frats each have their own personality. Parties are generally open, and you’ll have no difficulty finding out what makes each one different from the others. Good luck on the mountain next month. You’ll love it!
