yup tbhnams. neha's right, sats are not all that important...focus on your ECs. they like people who are actively involved, so u haven't had your cca fest yet right? find a cca where u can play a major role, like maybe obtain a leadership position or something. of course a cca which allows you to slack may seem tantalising haha...but that's a sin to the adcoms. Oh yar, they also like people who go all out to pursue their passion. like if you are a environmentalist, maybe you could organize some tree planting campaign or something at your school...or if u love helping people, maybe go help do some disaster relief work in Nias. you're lucky cuz u're starting early, u have lots of time to enhance your overall image! so good luck to you and to all those waiting for the BIG FAT envelop. and to those who got rejected, don't worry, look at me, i had to handle 4 straight rejections haiz...time heals all wounds :)
anyway, accepted: carniegie
waitlisted: duke
rejected: harvard, dartmouth, brown, cornell standford upenn
pending: princeton

oops. sorry "stanford"
hope no stanford adcom reads this haha...but oh well. it doesn't matter any more

beef up your ECAs, join a sport. that's the most important part since the curriculum is so academically focused.

i feel UK uni are over-rated and US uni under-rated in singapore....

har? really? I seems to me most only care at oxbridge if you're talking about UK, but the price of US unis is waaay over the top. Ergo, US is overrated. ;)

Seeker: r u at Penn? that would be one of the place I want to apply as i wanna major in biz.
To all: thx alot:)., What would be a good time to take SAT? Should I take it at the end of my J1 or wait till the June hol of J2? Actually I'm trying to be active in my school's science council and interact club and working on organizing a workshop for the kids at science center. Prob try for VP or president when they started selection for the new comm..Should I take up a sports CCA as well for diversity? I'm in hockey also but the training is still quite slack so didn't really enjoy is. Had thought of quitting.
To aquagirl86: haha, what else do you still want:p..You got into Carnegie u noe:p..R u going to do engineering or comp science?
To leigh787: I dont think US is over-rated ah:)..I agree with Neha1 more.. The reason is prob becoz S'pore ed system is so much similar to British system..Also, who would wanna study in a system similar to S'pore if you decided to go overseas?:)..And one more thing, although the price of uni in US is rising, look at UK as well..The price of uni there is much more ex compared to US and the living cost is much more expensive.
To Neha1: ur bro is in J1 too? Was he from RI?

no he was from VS.... ya he is known as the traitor for not goin VJ in the end.... :D
i was form vj though....

the over and under rated is purely my opinion... i noe ppl i nvr expected who got into gd UK unis but looks at the acceptences for US,sp like HYPMS+duke+caltech...... itz harder than it seems in my poinion for US and easier than it seems for UK....
i so bloody regret not applyin UK..... :(

tbhnams:
it might be a good idea to take SAT in J1, because if the J2 June sitting is your first one and you mess up, you're not giving yourself a lot of room to try for a better score. The next one might be in Oct/Nov when you're already stretched thin trying to survive the A's.

It's interesting what you said abt UK education being more ex tho. I'm comparing the cost of my UK and US (ivy) options and at the end of 4 years, I save approx SGD 9,000 if I picked the former. shrugs But maybe it's just me. :o

neha:
"i noe ppl i nvr expected who got into gd UK unis but looks at the acceptences for US,sp like HYPMS+duke+caltech...... itz harder than it seems in my poinion for US and easier than it seems for UK...."

I think there was post somewhere that explains this. The reason is UK uni tend to give out more offers then they had places (except for Oxbridge) because not everyone will make their offer grades, and also because not everyone will accept their offers.

In many cases, there are also people who made the conditional grades asked for at their firm universities but were still rejected eventually because among the offers the uni gave out, others achieved much higher grades in the end.

The only special case is Oxbridge where they give out offers for nearly the exact number of places they have available. Hardly anyone turns down their offer when given one.

hey ppl,
another one from vj here, from vj03. i got accepted into NYU, Stern. still deciding... anyone else going NYU?

Hey :)
I'm used to be from VJC first three months, then RJC latter three, then i went over to a United World College in Norway and am still stuck here waiting for my final exams in may mutter

Nice to see lots of singaporeans getting into good unis too!
I got accepted into Brown, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth and Tufts.
Rejected by Stanford, UPenn, Duke and probably Princeton.

will probably head down to brown, depending on aid. I got all i asked from from dartmouth 29 k :) so thinking of there, but it's an arse freezing place.

ath! vj '03 here too!! finally we are takin over the rj's here....haha :D

thnx jkh for the explaination, but still dun u guys feel with excellent academics and allrite CCAs u can get in oxbridge/lse/imperial.... but for US u need more than grt academics...

I promise myself and everyone at Collegeconfidential: One of these days I'll be more successful than many MIT, Harvard, and Wharton kids. Unless of course I go to one of those places for Grad.

NUS/NTU/SMU, see how, if any scholarship works out or where i get my first choice course...
