Two other non-audition theater BA schools that are still open for applications are Drew in Madison, NJ, and Temple, in Philly. Temple has auditions for MT but not straight acting, until you get to higher level courses.

Good luck with the auditions this weekend nifty! Switching your hotel was a good idea. I built in lots of cushion time to get to my D’s auditions and she still made some just by the skin of our teeth. You never know what traffic conditions are going to be like or how hard its going to be to find parking and with the stress levels so high anyway its better to keep stress about that stuff to a minimum.

Welcome kswise! Its an exciting journey. It was about this time last year that I started here at CC. I definitely recommend that you delve into the archives, searching for information about schools you are interested in. There is a ton of information here.

One piece of advice you will see pretty consistently and which I will pass on as well is to have a balanced list. Unless your kid is determined to only consider auditioned BFAs and is willing to take a gap year and come back and try again, the list should include some non-auditioned schools which are academic and financial safeties for your kid. Auditioned programs have very long odds and its nice to have some options if they all fall through. Even better if at least one of them is EA or rolling. Its a big relief to these kids to have an acceptance during this stressful period of auditioning and waiting.

My D is looking at two of the schools on your current list- Emerson and Rutgers. She doesn’t mind the urban setting of Emerson and because she likes the BA track (which is also by audition) she is OK with the cut (kids cut from the BFA go to the BA track). They have gorgeous facilities. She enjoyed her audition there.

She is also applying to Rutgers. We will visit the campus and she will audition at the end of the month so I will know more about it then.

What’s interesting is how unique each kids list winds up being. There’s much less overlap between us than you might expect!

Fortunately my D completed all her auditioned schools in January and now it is wait time. She has already been accepted into 4 non-auditioned schools and 1 auditioned school she has been accepted to the school and now awaiting theater acceptance.

She is not making a list of favorites because she says she does not want to feel like she is forced to accept a second or third choice. Good in theory but she does have difficulty making decisions but I would rather have her facing tough choices than no choices.

The problem I see is that she is really one of those kids that I can see at a variety of campuses. She loves Emerson’s urban campus but could just as easily see herself at a traditional campus. Weather is not an issue for her nor the size of campus so I’ve been trying to get her to make a list to define what qualities weigh more than others.

She is only applying to one BFA(NYU) and really does seem to want to have the flexibilty to atleast minor in something else.

I’m one of those moms that loves to look at the college websites and discuss all the activities with her. I hope that she can weigh all her choices well and matriculate to where she is meant to be.

I just thought I would clarify how cuts work at Purchase for people who were curious about it earlier. The cut for the BFA program is not to fill a quota and is not necessary. Evaluations (“boards” “reviews”) are held four times a year, at which the student sits down individually with their faculty to discuss their growth. Everything is very out in the open. If a student is in danger of being dismissed from the program, they have to first be put on “warning” “probation” or “final probation” and have at least half a semester, but usually an entire semester to turn things around. People are NEVER cut because they aren’t “talented” enough.

Adelphi has a wonderful performance BFA. I would compare it very favorably with CMU or BU in many facets. D would be proud to go there.

We did a tour of the Northwestern Theatre Dept this morning, to cap off our intense week in Chicago. Lovely facilities, nice people, extremely exciting program.

D and I had a very good talk, for the umpteenth time, about the spectrum of opinions about acting programs we have heard so often. Actors should focus on craft; they can pick up general knowledge through the plays they are in, and from the world as they experience it ------ Actors should get the broadest education possible, to bring to their work in the theatre, and hone in on craft as they work in the profession.

We’re convinced there are no REAL answers to this eternal question. It is a matter of personal preference, and people at each end of the spectrum have proven to be successful and satisfied. We also agreed that life is long, and if you choose one path, then later if you feel you’d want to follow the other, it’s always possible.

I’m hoping that she gets acceptances that will provide her with the opportunity to see what’s in her heart and make the right decision for her. So far she already has a “one of each” group. Hopefully she’ll get more schools along the continuum and can know which one is best for her when the time comes.

EB – son would have visited NU yesterday a.m. before his Chicago auditions if the two directors in his life right now hadn’t been so darned inflexible! Glad to see one of our kids got to visit :o)

Hope everything went well for your D this week!

Everything did go well: i.e. she did the auditions. Although she seemed to do fine overall, she’s admitting now that she’s sure she won’t be accepted to any of them. I can understand her feelings - it’s very scary. Just have to put it out of our minds for now, I guess.

I’m sorry your S didn’t get to NU. It certainly was convenient to get that tour in while we were down there. It’s a very nice facility, and the program is very exciting. My D had never seen the campus before, so I’m glad I can cross that task off my planning list.

My daughter loved SUNY Purchase! The staff was welcoming and she had a great auditioning experience. My advise, forget what you have heard and go there with an open mind!

maggie3 - I hope your daughter has a great time auditioning at Purchase. My daughter has not heard from Purchase yet. She has been accepted at RSAMD and she learned today that she made the final call back for Juilliard in NY next month. Juilliard invites 40 prospects back for a weekend session from which they pick 18-20. I think it will be a great experience. She is very excited!

dseader - that is fantastic news for your D!! Good Luck to her. What an honor and a great experience. She should be darn proud of herself. Thanks for your positive feedback too. I hope your daughter hears good news from Purchase.

Can you tell me how the audition went for her? Was it long? Did they ask many questions? She had to re-schedule and it’s for this weekend @ 8:00 am ughh.
We are close however, not fun first thing in the am.

I don’t know if there’s a more appropriate thread for this, but I wanted to share that I got a call today informing me of an invitation to callback weekend at University of Minnesota for the BFA/Guthrie Actor training program (in case you don’t know about me, this school is my dream school!)!! I, of course, started to cry :)
