<p>174 is ridiculous. My son just graduated. His frat brothers are going to top 20 med schools and law schools and entering engineering firms or commissioned as officers. They worked very very hard, are very very motivated and serious, took the hardest courses offered, went abroad, studied new languages and served on engineering and medical projects for Duke Engage…all while having a lot of fun with friends and attending tons of Duke’s great sports and arts offerings. The best people at Duke are both rich and poor. You will meet fascinating people there. Just because some of them came from privilige does not mean they don’t intend to make their own way in life. Duke admissions always puts together an interesting class with an international outlook. East Campus is one of the happiest chapters of your four years at Duke…ya’ll will have a blast.</p>

This is his extremely flawed ranking which ranks Duke the same as Dartmouth when people accept that Duke is better because Duke gets more funding and has better academics overall than Dartmouth. He also ranks Caltech higher than Harvard even though Caltech doesn’t even have a med school, law school, business school, and barely any non-science classes.
His methodology is extremely flawed:

I only use National Universities and base this off two factors: Academic Selectivity and Academic Quality.
I weigh both factors equally.
Public universities are ranked fairly low in this system because their selectivity is admittedly much lower than many of the private universities despite their popularity and academic rigor.
For example, I would put Emory and UC-Berkeley on par when it comes to academic quality. However, Emory’s admission standards are more rigorous and thus is ranked quite higher…

<p>I think your perception of how preppy Duke is depends on where youre from. I come from a preppy high school, so when I visited it didnt seem preppy at all. If you come from a city, you’ll probably be of a different opinion. I dont think it’s preppier than any of the other top schools I visited, though.
