The Thread for College Interviews

Has anyone done an interview for Rice University? how did it go? what kind of questions did they ask? I have an interview with an alum so how much would that affect my admissions there? thnx so much guys, hope to get some awesome feedback

bump bump bump

I recently had an interview with the GWU senior admissions director when he came to hawaii and it went really well–if you can, go for the alumnus interview at the least. The admissions director i had really loved the enthusiasm and great interest i showed to go to their school. He said that they really want students that want to be at their school so if you can reflect that as well as your overall personality, then you’ll have a great interview

I got a call from a Duke alumni interviewer today, and I have a few questions.

I don’t this she even told me her name! All she said was that she was a Duke alumni interviewer and asked when would be a good time to meet. I had to prompt her to give me her address and other pertinent info. Is there a way to look up local interviewers or should I just introduce myself when I get to her house and hope she does the same?

I am going to the interview directly from my school which she is aware of. She lives very close to my school and is probably aware of what our dress code is (uniform shirt and long pants). Should I wear my school outfit being sure to wear a nice, dressy pair of pants, or should I change into a dressier outfit before going to her house?

Are Duke interviews informational or evaluative? She made it seem more informational, but I want to be prepared for anything.

artstar: You should address him/her as Mr. X or Ms. Y unless they insist that you call them by their first names.

hahathatsfunny: try to contact Duke admissions and get in contact with your local alumni interview coordinator. you can probably find that info. Otherwise, be courteous and frank: “Hello, I’m Joe. Glad to meet you. Funny thing about our earlier conversation is that I don’t recall your giving me your surname.” Your school uni should be fine. Although getting in some nice business casual clothes might make you feel more at ease. Good luck.

Just had my University of Rochester interview
I think it went pretty well. It was basically informational- my interviewer was really nice and offered to buy me hot chocolate but I declined instinctively- I don’t know why, maybe because I was planning on asking him if I could get HIM anything, and I think he thought it was a little weird.

He didn’t actually ask me any questions, basically just told me that I could start however I wanted
good thing I brought my resume to show him because I blanked out and couldn’t think of a good intro besides “HEREWOULDYOULIKETOSEEMYRESUME??” We talked a little about my activities and then I explained what I’m interested in and what I like about the school. He talked most of the time and shared his experiences, which was nice but a little worrying because I didn’t talk about me as much as I had planned to.

Oh well, it seemed informational, he answered a lot of my questions, and he said I was “presenting myself well” so I guess that’s cool =) So all you U of Roch applicants-- make sure you prepare some questions!

What kind of questions abut UVR did u specifically ask?

Im having my interview soon, and am kinda panicky about it.

had my Bates interview yesterday
I don’t know why I was so nervous. it was super relaxed (everything at Bates was
they sure know how to make you comfortable!) and I never felt like I was being interrogated. my interviewer just asked me about
everything. it was a great chance to tell him about my interests and stuff. it was smooth, except for one minor choke on my part: he asked me how I could expose myself to more diversity from now until college, and I sorta stumbled (I live in redneck upstate New York). he realized I didn’t have an answer and told me about something he did. I didn’t even feel like I messed up, he definately made me comfortable.

i had my uchicago interview a couple weeks ago. man that was the hardest thing ever. he was an econ major and he started drilling me about econ. i havent taken econ since summer man. worst interview ever. but i was personable.

Let’s see
at my University of Rochester interview I think I asked pretty general questions, because I haven’t had the chance to visit yet because it’s seven hours away. Stuff like how the food is (I’ve heard bad things about their food on this forum but he said he doesn’t remember it being that way), does diversity play a large role in the going-ons of the school, did he partake in the cluster program, stuff about the city of Rochester, what he felt were the negative aspects of the school, undergraduate research, the teachers, club sports, the campus, etc
Not very deep questions, persay, but once again it was an alumni interview, very informal and not evaluative as far as I could tell.

Really, don’t worry about the interview. If it’s at the school with Admissions make sure you prepare some basic things to say, like why you want to go there, in case they ask you questions
I haven’t been interviewed there so I’m not exactly sure how it works. Alumni interviews are a breeze but come with things to ask.

Harvard Interview yesterday

The Harvard Club of New York is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The interview was relaxing and, actually, quite fun. Both alum that interviewed me were relaxed and seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. The atmosphere was lighthearted and the conversation flowed smoothly, abating all the fears I’ve had for the past few weeks
what surprised me was that they asked my GPA, SAT scores, etc. They said Harvard required that
I wondered why, since the school already has my grades; there was actually a part of their formed that they had to fill out.

Hi, I’m trying to arrange an interview for Holyoke early next year. I’m flying to England to take the alum interview and just want to know, especially from Int’ls, where their interviews were held and can anyone tell me, does the international interview actually help the application?

Sorry to hijack the thread, I just haven’t seen any int’l posts yet!

i have my pomona interview this thursday!!! im nervous, but im also a bit excited, which is a little weird for me

I havent submitted anything to the college yet–should i bring a resume?
and can someone give me an idea about how a resume is supposed to look? what should i include? should i put it in a folder? should it be long?

My Georgetown interviewer ended with, “why are you a winner, and why should Georgetown admit you?” Sound easy now, but it definitely took me a little by surprise, and it took me a few minutes to craft an appropriate answer (didn’t want to sound to arrogant, etc.)

Also, I was 20 minutes late for the same interview (not my fault AT ALL, my mapquest directions told me to turn onto roads that don’t exist
), and I had to call him and ask him how to get there. Luckily, he said it was fine and wouldn’t negatively effect my application, but it was soooo awkward. Haha, just an interview horror story
not really helpful to anyone else, but I wanted to share it.

I just had my interview at Pomona today.
Everything went well, I thought. My interviewer was a student working at the admissions office and she asked a lot of questions although they were not very tough and creative (I dont know if that is a good thing or not.) I didnt not bring anything but a book that I was reading while waiting, which i used for props
 haha
It was a book about psychological mysteries and I used it to talk about my interests. I asked her a lot of questions about Pomona which i think is a good thing and she answered all of them very well. However, I thought that while I was talking she would stare off at the clock at times
which made it seem as if she wasnt really listening to what i was saying
(yikes!)
The whole interview lasted about 45 minutes. She was very nice, although I wished she would have talked more about the college
I did almost all the talking. Overall, I thought it was a good interview
and I was glad that I wasnt that nervous
 haha

My Smith interviewer was so sweet. We were really similar in personality and interests, which was really interesting
I’m shy/quiet, and I giggle a lot, and so did she! so we had moments where we’d both stop talking and awkwardly giggle to each other. Kind of amusing.

but yeah
interview was at starbucks and very informal. It was more of a conversation, and we had a lot in common. She started talking about how her best friend lives in baltimore and I was like
mine too! and we talked about how sad it is that we don’t have time to visit them. Um
asked about my classes, and went from there. Didn’t have many formal questions really, I just started talking about my passions.

Just got note about my acceptance to Macaulay honors (aka cuny honors), Anyone applying to this who has questions about the interview or any part of the application can pm me at anytime. I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions.

I haven’t scheduled any interviews yet.

Do interviews take place after you’ve sent in your application?

And where do I schedule them? I know MIT displays them on the site, but for my other schools I don’t see them anywhere.

usually, you have to do interviews before the deadlines to submit the application, but some schools have deadlines that vary, especially for those who are international students or students who need to schedule an alumni interview.

Just got back from an interview with UChicago. It was alright, not exactly everything I expected, but there were the typical “Why Chicago?” questions and he did ask me what other schools i’m applying to, which i didn’t expect. the guy wasn’t the nicest person in the world. He’d challenge a lot of the things I said and would ask “WHY” or “HOW” a lot. And when he asked me to describe an “AH HA!” moment with the teacher i really didn’t know what to say so I said something dumb about my math teacher making up a rap to help us remember double angle trig formulas
lol yeah not exactly an AH HA moment
and then at some times i think he thought i was about to cry? Well my voice got kind of shaky because I started getting random bursts of nervousness when i didn’t know exactly what to say
but overall i think i made a decent impression.
