The Top Three myths about cornell

I thought about this reading a norcalguy response. I posted this request in another thread, so if you answered there, no need to do it here, but I believe it should be very interesting to bust some good ol' myths about a school we love.

Okay , myth busters, to start it off!

"Cornell was never "bad" with suicides. I'd put that as the #1 myth about Cornell. Cornell's suicide rate is way below the national average." ---norcalguy

I'd like to put CUT-THROAT CORNELLIANs as the #2 myth about CU. ---shawn33402

by the way, the above two are not etched in stone yet . After we get enough cornellian myths or urban legends about ithaca too, we can hold a voting contest to vote the TOP THREE, or top TEN if we get more than anticipated participation.

(For my private desire to know, myths about cornell premeds? premeds in general? anything to do with premed, cornell bio etc.? myth about anything to do with Cornell at all?? )

I thought another misconception about cornell,

"CU is a very rural college where they grow corn, and that's why it is called the University of corn"" ---a person I know.

I think he mixed Cornell U in Ithaca, NY with Cornell College in Middleof NoWhere, Iowa. really, there is a cornell college in iowa or some other big agricultural state

cornell college sure gives a bad name to Cornell University,
just like penn state university gives badly influences university of penn. some people, one of my classmates included, thinks u penn = penn state u, as in u penn is the state university of pennsylvania. Just like U of Washington gives a bad name to Wash U, MO, or even George Washington University. Just like.....there are too many to list.

Myth: Not all of the colleges at Cornell University are considered "Ivy"
Fact: Cornell University is a member of the Ivy League, all colleges and schools included.

Myth: Ithaca is cold...oh wait.

udubb doesn't give wash u a bad name. for medical school, it is one of the BEST (according to USNEWs, THE best primary care).

anyways, another huge myth is cornell has some secret, super bad for you, ingredient in the ice cream that makes them so good. wait, i don't know if that is a myth or not.

Ummm, cornell college is not a bad college, I know it's not cornell, but it has very good academics.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. that's really funny to me that someone would read this thread and be offended by that.

suicide, cutthroat students/difficult work, no fun/middle of nowhere, ugly girls.

Do any other ivies have bad myths?

Sorry fellow CCers. I apologize for making the assumptions without getting my facts straight, especially to those who like, go to, or are planning on going to these great colleges. It is a BIG MYTH that cornell college, U of Washington, George Washington, Penn state are "less-than" or "lesser" schools.

That person i know and I made jokes about cornell college from iowa and stuff and now I feel really bad, especially me in going along with such dumb assumptions. and I read a joke on CC Upenn - Wharton = penn state . Cornell college, u of washington, penn state etc. are all very good schools, and deserve to be recognized and not just live in the shadows of big u's just because their names are similar. I just heard people talking about howsome schools like wash u get confused with other schools etc. Only uninformed folks, me included, think unresponsibly so sometimes.

I'd put the weather in there too... my read is that SO much of Cornell is awesome (Programs, Professors, Waterfalls, Social Life, Golf Course, Lake Cayuga, Food, etc...) that people need something to complain about, hence they choose the weather...

But in reality, the weather is no worse then it is at Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Princeton, and Penn...

and of course the weather in Hanover, NH really stinks...

Okay, weather in Hanover, NH for Dartmouth college truly stinks, so cornell's weather is definitely not the worst in the ivy league. The college towns of cambridge , mass, princeton, nj, new havens, conn. , ithaca, ny, nyc, ny, providence, RI , phila., penn. etc are all in the northeast region of the US, and there couldn't be tremendous differences in weather etc, so they are all very livable. We don't want to go to ivy league for the weather like on some Caribbean islands, but to get world-class educations right? good weather is a nice bonus, so i don't care if ithaca's weather is 10 times worse, but seriously, what's the worst weather at cornell you can remember?

...worst weather?... hmmm...

it rained every Friday for the first two months of my sophmore year... that kinda stunk...

Most of the Saturdays were decent!

It was just a bad way to get the weekend rolling...

Ehh, I live 5 miles north of Columbia and 200 miles away from Cornell, and Cornell is not only a solid 10-15 degrees colder, but a hell of a lot windier. And considering the fact that NY winters definitely are not Duke winters, you (or I) will/am not be going to Cornell for the weather

too bad i got waitlisted by duke. I heard from a friend how North Carolina's weather is so nice and duke campus so beautiful (tho i doubt it's more beautiful than cornell), but my friend almost gave up Princeton to go to Duke.

I visited both schools, got rejected from Duke. Duke's campus is more beautiful, but Cornell's is definitely up there with the best of them for suburban/rural campuses.

alright nstync567, i'll definitely try to work my case with Duke then. I love cornell too, but i wouldn't want to lose a great opportunity for duke, tho my chance for duke is so slight, it may be nonexistent, and duke may not give me anything for FA.

personal preference i guess. i found duke's students to be extremely stuck up. the campus wasn't that hot either in my opinion. just compare their west campus with cornells. i've spent quite a few days sitting on libe slope watching the sun set as the clocktower in the background is playing pachabel's cannon or some other song. the fact that cornell is on a hill surrounded by gorges and the fingerlakes cannot be beat.

I'm sorry to bother with this thread, but I had a question for those accepted by Cornell through ED or RD. I'm currently a junior who's planning to apply to Cornell next year, possibly through ED. My GPA is roughly 3.8 UW, 4.2 W, exactly 2100 on the new SAT, 700s - 750s on 3 SATs, an international EC, three leadership positions; recs, essays are expected to be good. What outcome should I expect if I apply ED? Thanks.

hmmm this post looks awfully familiar ;)
