the true meaning behind the word DEFERRED

is ti just a polite way of saying, "we don't think we'll accept you in april, but we're just being nice"?

More like: "we might accept you unless somebody similar but better comes along."

frankly, I doubt it.. A large % of deferees (is that what u call me?... or call me :() are eventually accepted...
Possibilitiies
1. As banedon said
2. Just want a more measured view of your performance
3. They want you, by deferring.. a final acception will prolly promp you to join!!! (unlikely, but possible)

i don't know. i ahve nothing much to offer them anymore. all mygrades are in. and i wonder how many deferred versus rejected. seems as if everyone who isn't accepted is deferred.

sumone posted a rejection... and im sure that thereare rejects.. prolly ppl dont want to say it
What abt some other recos???

Chicago eventually accepts about 30-33% of deferrees...so it's not a polite way of rejecting you.

DUDE, no way. I just talked with my adcom, Norma Lopez, and she says chances as a Deferred EA are extremely high. We worked out the math together. Also, she said they rejected about 35% of the applicants. Accepted 35, and deferred about 30%. She also said that considering the percentages, deferred EAs have about a 45-60% shot in regular, the higher the percentages corrolate to showing continued interest in the school and improved mid year grades. remember..chicago also wants to increase their yield, just lke any school. if there are people who will commit to attend if accepted..that helps.

thatindiandude, sounds like you have a really good chance of getting in RD. Good Luck!!

deferral is a de facto rejection. sure, people are accepted from the deferred pool but what a deferral means is 'we will take you if and only if we can't fill all our spots with more qualified people'. Think about it. the Deferral accpetance rate is often lower than the average RD rate.

nah ollie, my admissions counselor told me that deferrals have a higher acceptance rate than regulars. we even worked out the percentages on the phone and they showed an approximate 45-60% chance for deferreds.

really? tt's encouraging... i was really disappointed when i saw the deferral e-mail!

but the only way this works is if you show continued interest in the school. you have to make them know that it is still your number one school, you have to show grade improvements, and make additions to your application file(positive, of course). this school does not just give deferees a cursory glance, they offer them a fighting shot with true consideration, so if you really want chicago, tell them, and tell them again.

my final exam grades will only be out in March.. do i send only then?

and... there's seriously nothing i can do with my grades now.. cos my final exams already ended 1 month ago

thatindiandude, ur definitely right about chicago. i meant in general that deferrals often equate to rejections.

Good luck to everyone who's been deferred. Chances are, you all will be accepted if you just express continued interest in the school and do what everyone else in this thread has suggested.

that's realy true, because i bet that about half of the people who have been deferred won't do anything about it, they'll just sit and wait and try to get into other schools. so if you really want to go to uchicago, show them!

Heh, I think it's all a crapshoot, just do your best and hope for the best. I'm still puzzled at how I got in, so I'm pretty sure that being deferred jsut means that they need for time to consider your chances and compare you to regular decision applicants. But by showing the initiative to apply early, I'm sure the will be a major plus for all EA people, so don't give up guys!

Last year, a girl from my school got deferred EA, and she kept calling the admissions office and she even sent in a recording of herself in some vocal recital...she got accepted RD, and goes there now. So basically, that kind of stuff really works. Just keep communicating with them and showing interest and something good will probably come of it. Good luck.

I have been emailing my admissions counselor. She says "We do have a good admit rate for defers - it's been about 30% in the
past, however there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the
spring. We don't defer students that we are not seriously considering
admitting during the regular cycle, but there are still many unknown
factors. I hope that helps"

Of the 30% rejected, I'm surmising that a good number of the kids have ED acceptances, which will mean that the original number of deferrees considered in spring is actually fewer.

I'm sorry, I was referring to the 30% deferred.
