the truth about microfridges, please!

I have read mixed reviews on the microfridge rentals. I don't really want to buy a refridge or microwave since I am from California and won't have a place to store either one next summer.

Place your votes....up or down, please!

I heard from someone who called Tufts that it is expensive to rent and you don't know if you will get a new or old gross one.

It's better to get a new one, because it's the same price as renting one from the school (or only slightly more expensive), and you won't have to buy a new one each year.

the school's microfridge is $230 a year to rent, repeat that four times and that gets pretty expensive. My roommate and I are just going to get one of those little cube ones from target for $70.

Well, if you don't want to "store" it, see if your daughter's roommate wants to split the cost of buying one, and maybe they will store it. Even if you don't room with that person next year, you ended up paying a muuuuch smaller amount of money for using it for a year.

Or you can put it in storage or something.

i agree with buying a new one - a lot of the microfridges you rent are gross/don't work that well. regarding the storage, a few of my friends from california stored them at people who live in MA's houses rather than putting them into storage for the summer

Buy a new one. The one that I had as a freshman was a Bronze Age artifact stolen in a museum heist. The fridge was so old that the door didn't seal well; most foods were fine, but milk would always spoil within a day. The microwave is really tiny and takes about 7 minutes to heat popcorn.

Buy a fridge at Sears or Target. Don't get the smallest size; get one size up (you'll need the space, esp. with two people or if you eat a lot). Get a microwave and 3-prong extension cord. Hide microwave under bed, out of sight. Do not use when RA is in your room. Once upon a time, you could actually have a microwave in your room, so long as it was only plugged in when in use. Not so much anymore, but take advantage of the fact that the RAs aren't allowed to move your stuff around during room inspections (and really don't care).

lol, seriously, my friend once told his RA that he got a new microwave and she was like Oh awesome, can I use it sometimes?

(snorts laughing)

That doesn't surprise me. :)

the people who help you move in do NOT allow you to bring microwaves into the building on move in day! i experienced that last year. i agree with above that it's incredibly easy to get away with, but you'll have to put the microwave in an unmarked box if you want to get it inside your dorm on move in day

Or move it in after move-in day. ;) You know, go out and buy it a few days later.
