I spoke to Panther Central and found out that the rental for the school year for a fridge is $199. I think we can do much better buying one at a better price, along with a micro. My son needs to talk (facebook) his roomate to see how they can best work it out. Any thoughts ? They are in Tower A and freshman dorms don't come equipped with the either.

forgot to mention that you can buy one as long as you adhere to the specs (wattage and cu. ft.)

If you live close by and hauling the fridge and microwave home at the end of the year isn’t a problem, I think it is better to buy these items. We live far away in a small apartment, and we have always opted to rent the microfridge. Plus, I don’t have to worry about storing them over the summer.

It is a little expensive to rent, but it might be more cost-effective in the long-run. If you move into a suite or apartment in sophomore year (which is likely), it will be equipped with a full-size refrigerator. You probably won’t be using the micro-fridge in that case.

I’m going to buy a micro and fridge because even if i get a suite sophomore year, my sisters will be freshmen in one, three, four and five years and we’ll pass it down =). Haier seems to have a few good deals on fridges under 4 cubic feet.

Does anyone happen to know where to find the specs? I may have found a microwave and fridge I like, but I can’t buy them until I know if they’re permitted.

fridge under 4.2 cubic feet, micro under 700 watts, if i remember right. it was in the back of the housing booklet i got in mid-April, on a ‘what to pack’ list.

Thanks, RachelleyLee…I’ll try to dig that up, because I remember getting it. (Unfortunately, I got it in, you know, April, so I have no idea what has become of it.) The micro is UNDER 700 watts? The smallest I’ve found so far was 700 exactly.

we decided to rent the micro fridge after all. my son and his roomate are going to split the cost ($100 each), that way it’s all set up when he moves in and done according to specs. i don’t have the company name in front of me but if you call panther central they can direct you and also give you the specification info.

It is very convenient, and having the freezer is nice. However, one tip: Make sure next year you clean every component thoroughly to avoid the $25 charge! My daughter left the microwave with a tiny bit of spilled soup, and we had to pay.

thanks lurknessmonster > i will spread the word to my son !

I found the Panther Central information, which is really easy to use - they provided a giant checklist of things to buy (which I could’ve used a few weeks ago). I did notice that they say a television should be 17" or smaller. Is this just kind of an arbitrary measurement, and do you think anyone will actually check? I haven’t been able to find anything below 19" thus far.

I don’t think people will be checking.

I wouldn’t worry about the size. Last year, there was a 60 inch in the Towers :)
