Hi I am currently a sophomore who is looking to transfer into UCLA for my junior year of college from Chapman University in Orange County. I am also a tv major at Chapman’s film school which has become a highly ranked film school. I was wondering that if I am trying to transfer into UCLA’s film school, a school where last year alone they only took 15 transfer students out of like 500, would coming from a good film school help my chances?..and what else would I need to increase my chances. If anyone knows anything about transferring into UCLA and also into their film school that would help so much! Thanks!

UCLAri,

Do you know where the transfers will be housed for the Fall 2010 admission phase? I was pretty shocked to see that a lot of them were housed in Hitch Suites and that Canyon place in recent years. Do you think they’ll continue putting transfers in great housing (i.e. anywhere not a high-rise residential hall)?

I originally wanted to apply as a cognitive science major/philosophy minor. However, my current GPA is 3.5 because I’m carrying a D in a 5-credit math class. I plan to re-take this course over winter, and will probably succeed in replacing it with an “A.” However, in the last two years at SMC I’ve incurred two W’s in that very same course. Everything else on my transcript is beautiful (even the math class prerequisite to the one I currently have a “D” in): IGETC completed, only two “B” grades, everything else is an “A.” But because I’m so scared about not getting into cognitive science (I don’t have the last two requirements for the major: two calculus courses. I also have those two nasty W’s on my transcript. I am currently carrying a D in an important math class for my major), I’m going to apply as a philosophy major and just transfer over to cognitive science/philosophy major/minor if I’m indeed admitted as a philosophy major (of which I have a very high chance of admission). I talked with the UCLA counselor who visits SMC, and she didn’t say anything bad about my chances of getting in as cog. sci./phil. She just said to explain the W’s and the “D” grade. Again, all I have to do is take two calculus classes at UCLA and I’ll be ready to be Pre-Cognitive Science just like all the freshmen. What do you think? I absolutely *&#$-ing hate SMC (Santa Monica College). It has thrown me into a whirlwind of depression the last 3 years I’ve been there, and I do NOT want to have to continue another semester there if I’m not accepted to UCLA. The cognitive science acceptance rate is basically 50% (roughly 60 applied; 30 got in with a GPA of 3.45), but even though that’s considered a good rate for an applicant, I could easily see them throwing me out with the lower half. I don’t know what the “what-is-actually-probable” scale is at UCLA, but I’m scared crapless–probably because I do not want to be rejected and forced to continue at SMC more than anyone, but it is my absolute dream to attend UCLA and just hit the ground running with everything at least starting out perfect with admission to the cognitive science major (which it looks like I really could have a fair chance of getting into). Argh, I don’t know. I’m currently working on my application, and I write very, very well and very pragmatically (my mind is going a mile-a-minute here, though, so don’t really consider this my best writing). Thank you so much for you time.

SHOULD transfers live in the triple? I’m currently at another UC school living in a very luxurious apartment with my own room and bathroom (I’m a bit spoiled because the cost of living in my area is very cheap), but I was looking to transfer to UCLA. I would rather live on campus so I can meet new people easily, but think I would hate sharing a small space with two other people. I dormed the first year at my current UC and didn’t love it, though I did meet practically all the friends that I now have at the school.

So, is dorming worth it? Thoughts?

I am a bit confused as to what major to apply at ucla.

For ucla, political science admit rates are a lot better than global studies rates. but i have more of my pre reqs done for global studies. which do i choose? they are both subjects that interest me, but I want the best possible chance of getting in.

What kind of grade requirements would be on the acceptance letter? Is a C ok?

Hey everyone, I currently applied to UCLA with MENAS (middle eastern and north african studies). I plan on changing my major to Sociology (IF i get in, plus i dont mind staying an extra year). Will this at all be possible?? (maybe someone from experience?) I appreciate honesty. My gpa is a 3.5 right now. however, the classes i am enrolled in the spring are gpa boosters and my gpa will go up to a 3.6 the least. thanks

If we are admitted for the fall semester, is there anyway of starting to take classes in the summer session?

@theduck
it is my understanding that we are able to take summer courses (like anyone else) but have to pay the “visitor” rate. $286 per unit instead of $229

oh, and registration starts march 1

Thanks :)…

help help!!! guys…
while i was waiting for the announcement from the schools i applied as a transfer student as you guys… i just found out today that actually one of the classes i am taking now in spring 10 at my cc is not uc transferable!!!.oh noo… why have i not noticed that!!!. so as a result… i will only complete 59 units by the end of spring instead of 60 ^. omg… does it mean i am doomed?.. i’ve got a good gpa and many good things within my application… will they really reject me due to that 1 unit i didn’t complete??? any one can help me ?? ~><~

btw; i’m planing to take few class during summer, so by the end of summer 10 i will sure to have over 60 unit, but i don’t know if that makes a difference to my situation now… no…#$!$@!#$!#%

Simon. It totally matters.
If i were you, i would:

1-- Triple check that you don’t have 60 units. Make sure to count AP credit if you have it. (you probably did this step already)

2-- if you really only have 59 units, you could probably take a couple weekend courses to get the 1 unit. For example, I have a friend that needed an extra unit for financial aid and took a vegetarian cooking class that took two weekends and he got 1 unit for it. Make sure to sign up for a class or two like that asap and let the collages you applied to know that you have done that.

3-- Talk to a counselor at your college as soon as you can.

Thanks a lot! it really helps

I found one UC transferable online course which just started this week and I can add
then as soon as I added the class, I updated my application

and it shows

so everything is fine now??? or I have to contact the UCs just incase that they have processed without seeing the change I made ?

again, thanks for your help!!! : ) (a cooking class? seems interesting!!)

nope, your not quite off the hook yet i’m afraid. If you go to the UC application update webside (https://admissions.ucop.edu/wip/login.do) and read down a bit, it says:

“If your in-progress or planned (i.e., winter or spring) class schedule changes or if you receive D or F grades in your winter coursework, immediately update this form. If the deadline has passed, then you must notify the admissions office at each UC campus to which you applied.”

So you have to notify the admissions offices of the UC campuses you applied to directily, in either a fax or a letter. Personally, I would call the admissions offices and make sure i was giving them the information in the correct way, but i’m sure that somewhere on their websites will be that information. For example berkeley says:

Q: I added (or dropped or changed) my coursework after submitting my application. Do I need to let you know?
A: You must let us know, in writing, about any changes to your courses or grades by mail or fax. Please send your signed letter to:

The Duck:
“If we are admitted for the fall semester, is there anyway of starting to take classes in the summer session?”

Yeah, you can take summer school classes. No, you don’t pay extra registration rates once you accept admission.

The deadline for financial aid is April 30 (well, the deadline for free aid I believe) though.

Anyone have a time frame of when to start looking for UCLA Admission decisions? Are they posted online?

How important is completing 60 transferable units really? In my case I focused only on what I needed (prereqs, IGETC) and I will still be 3 units short. However, I still got into UCI and UCSB. Will this affect my UCLA & UCB admissions???

I guess I should also mention that I have a 3.9 GPA and will have completed all of UCLA’s prereqs.

did your provisional acceptances say anything about getting 60 units?

I’m surprised, because i thought 60 was pretty much mandatory. My guess is that it would matter at least some though, even though you got into the other schools.

our spring semester prior to transfer to ucla are we required to have at least a 2.0 or 2.8 gpa?

I believe that you’re required to have a 3.0 GPA with no D’s or F’s this semester.
