Ask a Fall 2011 UCLA Transfer (me) anything!!!

Hey peeps.

As admissions are about to start rolling in, I'd like to offer my help to those of you who have been accepted, still pending acceptance, or potentially applying.

Ask me anytthinnngggg. I am actually quite knowledgable about from anything UCLA admission, academic, research, socially related. I'm hoping you take advantage of this opportunity so you can better adjust yourself when you officially transfer.

A little about me:
I was accepted Spring 2011 for Fall 2011 as a Microbiology, immunology, molecular genetics major.
I later switched to Neuroscience upon orientation.
I'm not sure if I'm pre-med.
I've done a lot of research.
A LOT of extra-curricular activities.
SO far i've maintained a 3.7 GPA after starting here during the Summer.

GOOD LUCK this evening.
And ASK AWAY.

are any of the admissions trick accurate?

Does ucla do semester or quarter system?

quarter system

All UCs are quarter system save for Merced and Berkeley

I apply as a Math applied science. once i got in can i switch to math-econ?

I applied as Electrical Engineering with gpa of 3.73, im done with igetc including this semester.

Is there any hope for my stats since I have not seen any good sign by now :(

How many classes does one usually take per quarter? I heard it’s 3.

The so called signs are like 80% sure proof.
Personally, I had the signs. But I also know people who didnt have the signs and got in.
Have patience, only 5 more hours guys! :)

@wcwei5800 You can switch to math-econ only if your current class is not impacted. Upon getting accepted, you should visit the math-econ dept before SIRing and ask them.

@mangochoko As for electrical engineering, as long as you have done all of the major prereqs (igetc doesn’t matter for engineering) and you have that GPA, you have a really good chance.

@Philosoup. 3 classes is perfect to start out with. However, I am taking four classes right now. If you take more than three, make sure at least one is really easy. the workload builds up so easily here.
Your first quarter, don’t take more than three!

@Noriebee thanks a lot. I’m a philosophy major so if I get admitted, do you suggest I take 2 philo classes and 1 easy class? And do you know if orientation is mandatory? How do you enroll in classes at orientation? Do we each take turns on the computer or something? And are we allowed to submit transcripts in person?

Hi and thanks. Whats the cheapest way to go with housing?

What was your gpa when you transferred?

What is the transfer housing like? Is it possible to get on campus housing where you can get your own room? Do you know of any nice housing close to campus that would allow small pets? Sorry to overwhelm you with questions, but the idea of looking for housing has been really stressing me out lol.

Hi
How long will it take to graduate after transfer for Chemistry…? Generally?

You mentioned that you changed major at orientation? Do you know if it’s possible to switch from MCDB to Human Biology and Society? I was trying to pick between these two while applying and ultimately made the decision to apply as MCDB. The Human Biology and Society major page recommends not applying to the major directly as there are limited spaces…but is it still an option. I don’t mind if it doesn’t work out I mean I still find MCDB interesting…even neuro or General bio. Also, how did you go about finding research? If I chose to attend, I might be leaving behind some really sweet research opportunities…just want to get a general opinion on how hard it is to get research as a transfer student.

What does UCLA generally look for on the application, other than the high GPA? What kind of qualities as a student?

does ucla have a transfer admit day?

Hi, I’ve been looking at the AAP page and they have a summer program that looks really intense… I was wondering if you or any of your friends have participated in it and if you have, how was it? Thanks :)

Yes chewbacca1432 it’s under events when you log into the decisions website.

How easy is it to change your major? Do they expect to hear a good reason as to why or can you just change it (if it’s not impacted of course)?
