The ULTIMATE answer to your chance question

Every one of you has been asking one single question: Do I have a chance for XYZ college? Here is the answer:

Of course. No matter what your stats are as long as they are not too low for xyz college, you have a chance unless you don't apply, which your chance will then be absolutely zero.

Then, the question becomes: How much chance do I have? Honestly, we CCers can't tell you. We don't have the experience or the perspective of an admission officer; as a matter of fact, we are just students or concerned parents. Yes, the numbers are significant: GPA, class rank, SAT score, etc. But, they don't determine your admission. There are other things that will be considered: essays, recommendations, etc. Because of this, we can't tell you what your chance is because we don't know you. We don't know what your essays are about, how well written they are, if your teacher recommendations are remarkable, and most importantly, your passion and personality. All we know about you is the numbers, and, therefore, we judge your chance on them. This isn't accurate.

So, what can you do? JUST APPLY. Don't let anyone tell you what your 'chance' is or if you are not good enough. Just apply because you don't know what is going to happen.

I know it's very tempting to post your chance thread. But, do you feel comfortable sharing your stats and being criticized or being falsely praised by clueless students? When you read the other stats, do you compare your stats to theirs? Do you feel inferior to them? Do you compete with them and do more things than they do or accomplish things they did? Although I make a few posts, I have been on this forum for over two years reading the chances threads. I cannot tell you how much my self-esteem went down or how depressed or hopeless I became. This hurt me, both academically and socially. Then, my father brought me back to reality. He said, "Focus on your own race. Don't pay attention to the others." I took my father's powerful words, and became a better student. I became motivated again and got my self-esteem back. Don't compare yourself to the others and look down on yourself.

Anyway, sorry that I keep rambling on and on. I am little high on caffeine. Lol. Good luck on your college applications! Remember, focus on your own race; don't pay attention to the others.

Very insightful.

true, but we still ask for chance anyway.

thanks for your advice. but frequency is right. some people tell us same thing you said, but we don't listen to them.

best news i herd all week

AMEN!
some stupid 10 character rule.

you are right. also, your name somehow reminds me of harry potter. lol.

good point, but i think it's still nice to know if you have a reasonable hope of getting admitted so you don't waste your time with applications and essays.

generally, people want the "you're in" or "you have a really good chance" response; I've always felt that they're sort of useless, but they can be entertaining sometimes!

make me wonder how many ppl actually don't apply to a college when CCers tell them they have no chance.

I would agree with you except for this is the "what are my chances?" sub-forum, go to a different sub-forum (which incidently are also filled with chances posts, which I can understand you protesting) and complain there, but honestly, the sub-forum gives what it promises.

people just want to see some competition!

I was just trying to help. That's all.

Newsflash: College admission counselors dont know us either, and most students' essays are more about what makes them sound smart and what the colleges really wnat to hear rather than a glimpse into the students' personalities.

Isn't that one in the same? This generation of helicopter parent syndrome is really something, isn't it kids? I don't know how many times I've been sitting in the library finishing up some homework with some kid in tears around the corner, talking on a cell phone, swearing up and down that it's the bad professor, and not him/her. Kids just don't go to school for themselves anymore....it's preposterous.
