The Ultimate Supply List for Boarding School

does anyone know of any good small printers I can buy for my dorm room?

i have one of those small canon printers where the top folds out
i’m googling and i can’t find the exact model, but they should have a couple at best buy.

Any more suggestions on compact printers for the dorm?

J. Crew is REALLY expensive. Do you guys shop in kids or adult
On the website for men, the sweaters can be easily 100+ dollars!

B u m p !!!

The Container Store has some really awesome stuff and a section dedicated to dorm rooms! :D

I find this list fairly amusing. My advice would be to bring very little. You’ll quickly understand what you need & what you don’t.
I brought less and less every year. Only thing I would do is make sure you can sleep, clean and dress.

IMHO

Thought I should bump this for next years crowd :)

Note post 910 above. After two years, my kid still brings stuff he doesn’t want home every vacation–and requests other stuff we wouldn’t ever have thought of, which is easy enough to buy and send as needed. Your room will probably be small, and you’ll have a roommate. As fun as it is to make lists and plan, I’d really advise bringing the bare minimum until you’ve scoped things out. Here’s a slimmed down list–not that you won’t want some of that other stuff, but better to wait to see if, for example that handy over-the-door hanger is going to obscure the full length mirror already on the back of the door

Anyone know what to do when your school doesn’t let you nail, tape or stick stuff to the wall, the recommended sticky tack but I don’t think that could hold a bulletin board
the overdoor hangers are good but there is only one door, anyone have other ideas?

The stick-on wall hooks by 3M come in lots of different sizes. If you get a board that’s not too big, you can sometimes find one that has it’s own sticky stuff that will peel off the wall at the end of the year (just be careful when you peel!) Again, though, this is a case where waiting until you get there can be a good idea because the dorm may have something built in. For example, my kid’s dorm has a strip running along the top of the wall that stuff like bulletin boards can be tacked into. Also, different sticky stuff works better on different kinds of walls.

Thanks for the very useful thread. I am sending my 14 year old with most items listed here, except for a shaving kit. At what age do some other kids typically start shaving? I recall that I was 18 before I first shaved.

My son was 15 when he started shaving. The boys at Exeter usually participate in No Shave November and also February to prepare for Moustache March. :-)

My younger daughter fenced in a Y12 (1999-2002 birth years) tournament yesterday and one of the boys she beat had a mustache.

I was thinking of a shaving kit as a repository for toothbrush, floss and zit cream as much as a place for a razor. My boy would NOT use one of those shower totes–girl stuff in his book–so he needs something to tote all the small stuff in and out of the bathroom. My kid is still in the fuzzy haired stage of life; an electric razor, used every few days, is all he needs.

This good thread may be timely for those starting to plan.
