I agree with those who observe that the list of things to bring is ridiculously long…but I still think it’s valuable information. I wouldn’t dream of urging anyone to look at this as a checklist or to-do list or shopping list but I would urge people to look at it for ideas and reminders as they do their own planning.

For all of you going to boarding school for the first time this fall, this is something you might want to look through. It has a lot of great ideas, but also bad ones. Take it with a grain of salt and use it as inspiration. Also, start shopping for stuff you know you will need now. Shower caddy, any decorations, etc, b/c you don’t want to complete with college students for a limited supply. But don’t buy everything. Make sure how big your room is and such.

Hey, so why does OP suggest that no halogen lamps should be brought? I have a halogen desk lamp.

@celery
Many schools consider halogen lamps a fire hazard and do not allow them in student rooms because the bulbs get very hot and can set fire to papers or cloth placed near or over the lamp, or if it falls over onto a pillow, rug or bedding.

Check with your school before you bring halogen - but you might want to consider
the newer, much safer LED lamps in any case, which work well and are inexpensive(buy at Lowe’s or on-line).

@celery,
2prepMom, you’re spot on, but I just wanted to add that many schools are trying to be more environmentally conscious, and halogen lamps aren’t that eco-friendly.

bump for 2013!

Make sure you buy Twin XL (EXTRA LONG) bedding- Foam pad, mattress pad, two sets of sheets with standard pillowcases and a comforter. Try to purchase everything you need before mid August because college students will be out in force buying the same stuff!! Also- make sure you buy brands that are well made and durable. It’s worth the investment.

I usually go to Home Goods, Marshalls and TJ Max in early-mid July when they have the best “Dorm” selection. You can find Nautica, Ralph Lauren and many other brands in Twin XL- all at very good prices! I’ve also had good luck with Macys online “Sale” bedding, too.

Happy shopping!

Make sure to bring stuff for your room that makes it your room!! You don’t want to get to school and have all white walls. Posters, signs, calendars, bulletin boards, white boards, and pictures are some of the things that most kids have to decorate. You want to make your room as much like your home away from home as you can.

Buuuummmmpppp!!!

Spray n’ Wash helps ridiculously. It will get out almost all stains and can save you quite a bit of money on replacing clothes.

Thx everyone for all the useful info!!

bump! Does anyone have a good compiled list?

Don’t forget hangars!

Bumping this for 2014 because I thought it would be helpful and informative :)

bumpity bumpity bumpppppppppp

bump! I just read all 63 pages (including that bit at the beginning with Disney) and this is so helpful! Though, i am getting a little ahead of myself. I haven’t even inquired yet! And please dont say anything about it, I know its bad
