The University of Texas Class of 2020 Decisions Thread

wtf no decision in CS

College of Liberal Arts (Pending LAH and Plan II)

Residency: Texas
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian-American)

Stats -

SAT Scores: I’ve taken the test only once, and I received a 2200 (700 M, 710 CR, and 790 W)

ACT Scores: I’ve taken the test only once, and I received a 34 (35 E, 31 M, 34 R, 36 S)

SAT II Scores: I’ve taken three tests, each only once, and I received a 710 on Literature, a 740 on Spanish Reading, and an 800 on US History.

GPA: My high school (a large, public high school with approximately 600 students in the Graduating Class) is ranked highest in the city but does not rank on a 4.0 scale yet. My unweighted GPA is unknown, but I did the calculations and I think I have a 3.99 (4.6 weighted), but I’m not sure because, though I have received As in every class, two of those throughout HS have been 92s. My official GPA, of which I’ve recently been made aware, is 102.47.

Rank: 3rd in the class

Course Rigor: Most demanding, according to GC (~11 Honours Classes and 17 AP Classes)

AP Scores: I’ve taken 10 exams so far - US (5), WH (5), L&C (5), Span. L (5), Comp. Gov. (5), US Gov (5), Macro (5), Physics 1 (3), Micro (5), and Human Geo (5)
The six to follow are Env Sci, Bio, Euro H, Span Lit, French L., Eng Lit.
The one exam I did not take: Psych

Notable Honours: NHS Member in Grades 11, 12 - contributed much to Service Projects/dissemination of info, National Merit Semifinalist (Final Status Pending, Grade 12), Academic Achievement Award (top 5 by GPA, non-cumulative, Grade 10), National AP Scholar, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, AP Scholar w/ Honour (Grades 10, 11, 12), and Le Grand Concours (National French Competition) District Winner and National Top Ten Finalist

Notable Extra-Curricular Activities: Fencing (Several Years, have competed in multiple regional tournaments, after my coaches - former Olympic Alternates, retired, the club disbanded, but I study under another former student of theirs), Voice (2 1/2 years, perform Italian, German, and French Classical Music), UIL Social Studies and Current Events (3 Years) District Winner/Regional Competitor in CE and SS in 10th/11th grade, respectively, Spanish Language Club Member, Peer Tutor, and Creative Writing (For fun and have had a couple of poems published)

Non-Consistent Extra-Curricular Activities: Counselor in Training at a Summer Camp in California (1 week) - will probably return after Senior Year, Administrator/Volunteer for Local County Judge’s reelection campaign (ran a Phone Bank, poll-sitting excursions, etc.), active in local Mayoral Campaign, thinking of starting a Bernie Sanders for President Club at my High School - this would be sent in an update to Dartmouth, included in regular activities for colleges I haven’t applied to yet

Passions: Language (I speak Spanish nearly fluently, took 6 weeks one summer to study French at a local Language Academy, have taken German classes in school and online, and am currently studying basic Russian), Politics

Recommendations: One from my APUSH teacher (9/10?), one from my APWH and AP Macro/Micro teacher (10/10), one from my GC who also taught me APHG Freshman Year (10/10)

Essays: Writing is my strong suit - I’d say they were good, and my English teacher reviewed them, so

Hooks: None, as far as I know - Income Bracket (above 750K), Both Parents have Graduate Degrees, Overcame a fairly troublesome ordeal, the details of which were included in the Additional Information Section of the Common Application

@SirPepsi : were you admitted as liberal arts undeclared?

History Major, forgot to specify.

Seems like a lot of people were admitted yesterday, but still no decision for CS for me. My honors application still isn’t complete because my teacher has yet to send/do the rec even though he got all the info more than a month ago.

Does applying as undeclared hurt admission chances?

My son applied undeclared and was admitted yesterday. Most kids are truly undecided.

College of Engineering(Accepted Mechanical Engineering, Pending Honors)

Residency: Texas
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian-American)

Stats -

SAT Scores: Took the test twice (Highest Score 2270 : 780 CR, 760 M, 730 WR)

ACT Scores: I’ve taken the test only once, and I received a 35 (36 E, 33 M, 34 R, 35 S)

SAT II Scores: I’ve taken two test: Math 2 and Biology, received 800 on both but didn’t send in as UT Engineering apparently doesn’t look at SAT II and I took the tests after i submitted the app

GPA: My high school (a large, public high school with approximately 620 students in the Graduating Class) is highly competitive at the majority of our top quarterly go to UT Austin or a better school. Unweighted GPA ~3.7

Rank: In between 10 percent and 7 percent, so not auto-admit

Course Rigor: Very demanding, (17 AP Classes, every Math and Science AP except Physics 2, and like 11+ honiors)

AP Scores: I’ve taken 10 exams so far - US (4), WH (5), L&C (5), Bio (5), Physics (4), Human Geo (5), Stats (5), Psych (5), Calc BC (5), Comp Sci)5_
The six to follow are Env Sci, Chem, Physics C, Econ, Gov Eng Lit.

Notable Honours: NHS Member in Grades 11, 12, Academic Achievement Award, National AP Scholar, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, and French Symposium 3rd Place, Comp Sci UIL District Competition

Notable Extra-Curricular Activities: Job (Two Years), Founding Officer of Entrepreneur Club at School, Two Hospital Volunteer Programs/Internships during Junior Summer

Non-Consistent Extra-Curricular Activities: DECA ( didn’t do anything), Red Cross ( didn’t do anything), French Club/ French NHS (Junior Year Only)

Passions: Nothing Really,I just study hard and have fun.

Recommendations: One from my Physics 1 teacher and club sponsor (7/10 ?- I think he likes me reasonable well- to a lot but I briefly looked at his recommendation and it looked generic) , one from my Comp Sci Teacher(7+/10, really likes me, and rewrote recommendation because she felt she had more to say about me)

Essays: Honestly I don’t know, I am decent at writing but I am much better at writing fiction then reflection. Got my Dad to review them- he’s fairly good at writing, got scholarships when he went to college based on his writing, but he barely changed anything so I don’t know how much effort he put in.

Hooks: None, as far as I know - Income Bracket (above 200K), Both Parents have Graduate Degrees, no real ordeals to overcome, grades are good but not outstanding (dropped Sophmore year from half a B to 2.5) and I am not a minority in College.

Other Schools I am Applying To: With this school being one of my top safeties to match a lot of other schools have dropped out of application list since there is no reason to apply to more safeties. Schools I am still applying to- Georgia Tech, UMich, Stanford University ( a reach I know) , John Hopkins, Rice, UPenn (another reach), UC Berkeley and UC San Diego, Texas A&M( Safety of my safeties, admitted auto)

Why I got in- Honestly probably because of my SAT score, people say it is hard to get in to UT Austin when you are not auto, but for competitive degrees such as Engineering a lot of auto kids become content with a mediocre SAT score not realizing that their major needs a good sat score, and that leaves those spots for non auto kids because we try to compensate for non auto with good SAT scores. Plus the school I go to is really competitive, like I’m pretty sure we are in the top 10 best public schools in Texas.

Just some questions for you guys: do you know when honors decisions come out and UT Austin’s Presidential Scholars/ other scholarships. I know my parents are fairly affluent but with my sister entering college fairly soon after me (and judging by her current grades probably wont get into UT Austin, which is probable one of the cheapest high academic calibrate schools), a scholarship would probably clinch UT Austin for me unless by some miracle I make it into Stanford or UC Berkeley.

I hope this helped alleviate some fears for non auto-admit students as I know I got scared when I was reading the forums from last year and when my mom found “grammatical mistakes” in my application. Best of luck to those who have not received their decision yet and I might see you there.

@nihalani, your application looks remarkably similar to my own (not talking about format, but the stats, course rigour, etc.). I abhor standardized testing and cannot concentrate during them, but it doesn’t look like you have the same problem. I wish you the best of luck.

@collegeapps115 , which major in LA did you get?

@collegeapps115 , which major in LA did you get?

A person from my school got into Computer Science yesterday and he was non-auto admit 32 ACT and top 10% at competitive public high school

@nihalani Dang! You got your admission decision fast. Do you know other auto/non-auto admits who also got into Engineering?

@slg333, did your son apply as liberal arts undeclared?

Yes. He debated whether or not to apply to business school and in the end went with LA undeclared.

Are these decisions rolling in randomly or?
