I think a lot of people still don't know how good UVa really is. I think the University should actively work with the film industry, etc. to get its name out there - sort of like when free cars are given to movie studios in hopes they will use them in the movie.

Haha yeah, and get more applicants and make it even more difficult for OOS kids to get in.

Ideally, I think it should be 50-50 In state and Out of State. After you become an alum - hopefully you'll get in (I don't know your stats) and more importantly you will choose Virginia - you too will want the school to have stronger applicants.

Every educated person knows that UVa is a great school

I think it's sort of like every educated person knows that Penn is an Ivy League and not "Penn State"

Well everyone I know knows UVA is a good school, and they really aren't especially well educated (a.k.a. not top 50 schools educated). I think it has a good reputation for most people.

Yes, a lot of people know it is a great school - but it is not as recognized as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton. We should always try to make our school better - i.e. we are great, but there is always room for improvement.

Coming from California, I KNOW that a lot of people do not know about UVA. I told people I applied early decision to UVA and they asked me "What's that?" and I had to explain to them it was the University of Virginia and that it was one of the top public schools in the nation.

As danidebold just pointed out, we are more known in the south, mid-atlantic, northeast, and somewhat mid-west. We are as good as Duke and Penn, but unless we advertise, we will always be seen as just a good school - not a great HYPS school.

UVA should pour some money into a mass marketing scheme along the lines of what WUStl and others have done over the past few years. It's done nothing but help them in the rankings, which, in turn, has improved their name recognition.

I am from PA. Sooo many people don't know the difference between Penn and Penn State (especially but not solely out of staters). Saying UPenn is so redundant. But, yes, all the educated people know the difference.

Unfortunately, I tell people in my AP classes that I applied ED to UVA and I have actually had multiple people respond, "Where is UVA?" I don't even know how to respond to them. If I say ED to Virginia it goes a little better.
