The usma application

Does anyone know what the Essay prompt is... and how many recommendation letters (and from who) you need?

This is a secret hidden deep in the bowels of USMA admissions. It will only be revealed when candidates get their 2nd step admission packets in about 3 weeks or so.

Ah I see thanks. I thought maybe the essay is usually the same every year.

No way. That would make it too easy.

Mister Sinister: If you run a search you will see what the essay topics and recommendation letters have been required in previous years. There is a wealth of information on this site if you do searches.

it seems Mr Sinister would prefer to just pepper all of you with questions, rather than taking the initiative to find the answers on his own. An approach that does not bode well for success at a Military Academy. JMHO.

could not have said it better myself - I am through with him.

Same here.

I agree with previous 2 posts. He seems to be posting everywhere and anywhere on here and giving information that doesn't always agree with what he said previously. (Take a look at all of the different places he has already posted and some of things he has said.)

Applying to a Military Academy is serious business and not some kind of joke (if in fact that is where you really want to go).

JustAMomOf4 --- could not have said it better myself - I am through with him.

Ban me

You post at least one thread every day with questions that could be easily answered by using the search function or by simply calling the admissions office. It seems like the only thing people on this forum haven't done for you is fill out your application. Have you done any research?

Look, I'm really sorry that I'm asking for answers to my questions. I can't get them from the admissions office okay? The emails I send them take nearly a week or more to get a reply. Next, calling from overseas costs a lot of money, so I want to try to avoid that if possible. I'm having a hard time even getting in touch with my senator and congressman because they spit upon military families overseas. By all means, continue with this bashing thread. The hostility just came out of nowhere.

"rather than taking the initiative to find the answers on his own"

That's funny. Nearly half or more of the people that even come to CC that look for answers are parents, not the applicant. I think I'm taking enough initiative. If you guys think that I'm not thankful for your help, you guys are dead wrong.

Last time I looked around:

1) You currently live on the west coast, east coast and overseas
2) Your recent posts say you haven't yet take the SAT/ACT, but your older posts talk about the good scores you achieved taking it
3) You talk about cheating on your college application about Extra-curriculars because you said you are NOT applying to any military colleges
4) You say you want to make sure you get an applicant number but then you say you already have your DODMERB package

.....shall I go on?????

Sorry, hard to take you seriously if you aren't being honest with your posts.

Let's not be too hard on the young man.

I don't recall MS ever stating that he presently lived on either coast. His dad is in the military and the Soldiers and Sailors Act of the 1940s began a set of laws to recognize and compensate for the hardships our American fighting men endure by moving around the world, not according to their desires. One of the things they may do is declare a permanent residency, even though they are not currently living there. It can be a hazy issue with the service member themself. I think MS needs to see the base legal officer to help him understand from which coast he can claim residency.

The SAT issue, I think, is whether it is ethical to use a higher PSAT score ro gain official candidacy to USNA, than the slightly lower SAT which over the next year he will be able to improve. Once he gets into the preliminary online application, he will realize that he has to submit both the PSAT and the SAT. The Academy will look at the higher score as an indicator for official candidacy.

WP sends out LOAs and DodMERB packages to any potential candidate who can fog a mirror. Smilie. USNA is more selective and will only send out the DodMERB package to those who have completed 50% of the online application. He received his DoDMERB from USMAs initiative and has not yet received an applicant number from USNA.

I think we have a smarter than average kid here who knows more than he is willing to admit. Hence his questioning of a lot of our advice. He is in a unique situation and is prepared to take full advantage of this. When he starts discussing multiple district nominations, "curving" his PSAT scores, etc. we need to reign him in. Does he understand the ethical ramifications of his intentions? I don't know but I do know that it is our job to point them out to him. If everyone showed up at the Academy as ethical Einsteins, the Professional Development Dept wouldn't have anything to do. Correct?

At USNA, his desire to look at every side of every issue would soon cause him to be labeled a "Sea Lawyer" and he would spend the most of plebe year with a sign stating the same hanging around his neck. That is why I am doing everything I can to get him pointed at WP. Smilie.

1) LOOK. You haven't been paying much attention. My father was just as much confused with that situation as I was. I am nomadic, and we weren't exactly sure where I was from because my dad fulfilled many duties in two different states that a regular resident would do. We figured that out though at the end. End of story. I get the rules.

2) I stated THAT I took the SAT, but my PSAT scores were higher; therefore on the candidate questionnaire for the USNA website, I was planning on submitting ONLY my PSAT (which is completely fine I got a number from a different log in by only submitting my psat. It's a legit option. In fact, I faxed them my psat to prove my numbers were legit)

3) That is a lie. Learn to read posts. We were talking about one of the other varsities I did, where I DID not receive a letter. I think I have the RIGHT to at least say I participated in the sport, which I did 95 percent of the season. That's why Apps give you the option of checking both varsity and letter.. because sometimes people don't finish the season.

4) What? I did receive my package... and obviously I do have a candidate log in... Maybe you're confused. I did SAY that I didn't have one for USNA YET.

Seriously, get off my case. I never stated anywhere "Time2 help me out" If you have a problem with me, then go to your block function, and lets never speak again.

USNA69, per usual, everything you say I must agree with. I couldn't agree with you anymore.

MS,

This is actually a perfect place to ask questions about admissions to college. That's the purpose of this website. So, you don't have to apologize for asking questions. And, yes, you ask a lot of questions, but that's why a lot of parents say they remain part of this community. It's polite to try to find out the answer already as many are the same questions asked over and over again by so many others. So, the suggestion to use the search function first is really a good one. If you can't find the answer, ask and someone will have at least a partial answer for you. I know that you are in a unique situation, but I'm certain that your father can help you to meet with someone on post who can assist you. You likely have a WP alum stationed there who would be delighted to answer many of your questions.

"I'm having a hard time even getting in touch with my senator and congressman because they spit upon military families overseas."

I will take issue with you over this. You should not be trying to get in touch with your senators and congressman. You can go to their websites and contact the appropriate member of their staff who handles nominations. It is this person's job to follow up with you. Be courteous, respectful and patient and you'll receive your answers. This is a visible part of their jobs and they won't be spitting on you.

Please keep in mind that nobody here is "official". So even if you receive a satisfactory answer, it may not be 100% accurate.

"USNA69, per usual, everything you say I must agree with. I couldn't agree with you anymore."

Is there a double meaning in your message Mister Sinister? Probably not, but it wouldn't be out of place considering USNA69 has basically told you you're not a good fit for the USNA; a "sea lawyer" is just about one of the worst insults you can be labeled with.

As for USMA WP sending out LOAs and DodMERB packages to any potential candidate "who can fog a mirror", that's a ridiculous statement and an insult to those candidates who have worked hard these past four years to earn a LOA. To receive a LOA from West Point, or the equivalent document from any other service academy, is a rare honor and affirmation of a candidates great potential as demonstrated in their academic and leadership profile.

Alright, alright. This is turning into a battlefield here. We just all gotta calm down. Mister Sinister I'm in the same boat as you, I want to be a part of USMA 2012, and I am stressing out alot. From Dodmerb, to my grades not being stellar, to studying for the SAT, to nominations, getting hold of my transcripts, AROTC, and the list goes on man. But were all in this together. I wana say I know how you feel but I can't fully. I'm not overseas like you, and I am sure it's alot harder to deal with it all. As people say; try to search it, ask a friend, so on. If you want, send me a PM if theres a question on your mind. Maybe I'll know, maybe not. I know some people can be rattling you about it, but hey, it's just the beginning. Wait till we're getting yelled at by the cadre. Don't worry, we'll make it. If we don't make it for 2012, then were gonna try for 2013. And if we don't make that were gonna shoot for 2014. Just take it one step at a time, we will make it.

Apparently Mr. Sinisiter has had a significant change of college plans since he posted this on 7/18/07 in the forum called "Admissions & Varsity Sports" about his reasons for fudging his sports participation on his college application....

.....some things I want to point out to you. 1. I had no time for it. 2. My coach is real good friends with me, and told me he 100 percent understood what I was doing. 3. My class rank is 4 out of 190 4. I'm not going military 5. Our school transcript only contains our gpa, classes, and rank. Nothing more. .....

His words not mine.....you decide

Anyone can surf back and read the various posts people have made, just try it sometime, you might be surprised what you read.

MS, Thanks for the compliment. I think you know what I was saying. Please ignore this comment. WPSON doesn't have a clue.

Time2, I don't follow at all what you are trying to say in the above post. You tell us to decide. Why don't you tell us what you think. Your three previous assumptions were all wrong. I see this one in the same boat that you are misrepresenting what MS is trying to ask.
