So as the title says I’ve been wait listed at Deerfield & Exeter however I am awaiting a response from Andover. I currently live in the Cayman Islands because of parents work. The letter from Exeter said the committee admired me and that the Ten Schools Organization would discuss admissions on the 15th. So what I’m asking is is there a chance I can be moved off the wait list’s and what are my chances so far of acceptance or even wait listing at Andover?
P.S. One of my interviewers thought I would get into all three schools :P

I want to say thank you to all of the experienced parents out there willing to share their thoughts, you are all so incredibly helpful to us parents and encouraging to the kids.
My son has been wait listed for E, we only applied to 2 schools and this one he strongly preferred. We are living in Europe but US/EU cit.s. We are applying for 11th grade, not the best year to apply we know. We have bought a home stateside and it is 30 min. from E. We will be making this our primary res. sometime in the fall to the new year. My question is, would it be worthwhile to reclassify as a day student? Could this improve his chances of getting off the wait list? Or is it that they just don’t have a spot in 11th grade? (We did not apply for FA). We will only wait until April to see what happens, if he is still on the WL after April we will remove his name and he will finish with his IB here. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thank you

Lavaux, call or email Mr Gary and let him know about the home purchase ASAP. Being a day student puts him in a new pile.

@Lavaux5,

My best advice would be to call the AO as soon as you can. Let them know that Exeter is your son’s first choice and would it be possible or beneficial to reclassify. Last year my son (who is a day student) was WL and my husband inquired about changing his status to boarding. The person we spoke with said they don’t do that and even if they did he was better keeping his day student status.

I think the biggest thing you can do right now is not to just wait on the WL. Be proactive in letting the school know your level of interest. I really believe that is important.

Step back a moment from rush to get in any way possible and weigh whether going to a boarding school as a day student is really something your son would want to do. He will be missing out on a lot that the other 80% of the kids who are living together as boarders will be sharing.

Also consider that your son’s country of residence in Europe may have been the “hook” that made him an attractive candidate. Exeter & some other schools classify American expat kids as int’l, but I notice they also like to boast how many countries their students “come from” by residency.

If I’m an international waitlisted student, are my chances of getting off better than say one from the US?

No . . . unless you’re from some obscure country, and the one other student who was admitted from that country declines the offer. But, really, no, your chances are just the same as anyone else’s.

^ would you consider the Cayman Islands to be obscure ;)

not if one is an income tax dodger… ;)

haha no… my dads not even a banker like most people think

and anyways taxes are almost equal… no income but 20% sales tax on everything… not including duty X(

Thank you for all of the advice, it is very helpful. In the email they did say that the “10 schools” have agreed not to start discussions until the 15th and to hold off contacting until that date. I am not sure what that means for us, except not to call until tomorrow…
Is it best to get back in contact with the gentleman whom my son interviewed with? He was a super guy and really liked my son, (they are both into mountain climbing) and the interview went very well and he has been quite responsive to my son with his questions…
or do I just ask to speak directly with Mr. Gary…or just give a call to AO and speak with anyone? what would be the best course of action?
I do love Americans! I miss how friendly and helpful everyone can be! I would really like for my son to experience living in the US with “real” Americans before he goes off to Uni., which may or may not be in the US.

Here are my stats: SSAT 98th percentile-2301 (97 verbal, 94 reading, 96 math) I am an 8th American of Indian descent but currently residing in Saudi Arabia. I am a Mensan. My interviews fared well and all lasted longer than 45 minutes (both on Skype and campus) I know 6 languages: 3 different dialects of Hindi along with Spanish, Arabic, and of course, English . I somewhat rushed my essays. I am applying for 9th grade. My recommendations should be great, but I am skeptical about the language one. *I have won the presidential award for physical fitness and ranked first in the school for the AMC. My school only offers one honors course which I am taking. (Algebra 2) I have straight A’s

All the things you’ve listed are what got you onto the waitlists at the schools you’ve applied to . . . but none of us can predict which, if any, of your many talents might end up getting you off the waitlist. The four schools you’ve listed do not like going to their waitlists - they avoid it if at all possible. But if one of them ends up desperately needing an alto sax player, then you might get a call. But don’t count on it - if it happens, it will just be one of those lucky miracles!

If you haven’t read this thread in its entirety - from the beginning - please do so. It will help you understand how waitlists work.

I got very positive responses from the schools after I sent my recent awards and grades in.
How should I interpret this? >.< It’s like April 10 is the new march 10.

prepschoolplease, you done good. Keep in touch with the AO as you have, following etondad’s advice. I’m a firm believer that a good show of interest and enthusiasm is very important and could set you apart from those who do no more than return the post card. Good things come to those who go after them, not those who wait. Plus, the only person I know to come off a wait list (for acceptance into Dartmouth Medical School) was one who kept in touch with the AO. The chances are slim, but it does happen.

I am with honorarymom. Good job and kudos for you for pursuing this.

Keep up with your show of interest. Sometimes it will pay off.

Good luck

last year (as you can see by my username) I was hoping to get into Mercersburg Academy. I was so hopeful and tried so hard to get in because I felt like it was the best school for me. I was also waitlisted. This was due to a number a reasons, the biggest being the substantial financial aid I had asked for. I really needed the FA or else my parents couldn’t pay for it. I was so upset and everyday I have to admit I lost a little bit of hope. But, I still wished that I would be moved off the waitlist. It was important to reach out to the admissions office to let them know it was the only school I was seriously looking into. Finally, late May, the school called and said they found a spot for me. I was so excited and now I am a freshman, about to enter spring term, and loving it! I just wanted to share that this does actually happen! People do get moved off the wait list!

@mburghopeful12 did you do anything to convince the admissions office to accept you from the waitlist?

So here are my stats…

P.S. My recommender called Exeter after my wait list decision and ACTUALLY talked to the 9th grade admissions officer…
