the whole 32 bits and the 64 bits business

i am really confused about this whole 'bit' thing
my friend recently brought to my attention my choice outside of intel, which has always been what i used ever since i started buying computers
he says hes planning to get an AMD which is 64 bit
that hasn't concerned me until now, when i realized i need a new computer aswell
intel core 2 duo has a quad core now, and AMD has an FX x2 core aswell
the main difference is the bit?
one of them is 32 and the other 64

now my questions
when i buy a computer with AMD FX x2, does it come with 64 bit windows then? if so, will that windows support all the other 32 bit applications?
and is 64 bit truly faster/better or what?

i made a new thread because i felt this was a different issue, sorry if you're going "OH him again!"

oh yeah, and one more question

does AMD 64 used in normal 32 bit windows take advantage of all the speed (if there are any gained) and other bonuses that comes with a 64 bit processor?
so in short, is there Better performance out of a 32-bit operating system.

Not really. Programs designed to utilize 64 bit extensions will benefit the most.

Get XP 64 bit edition...careful of driver issues though.

so using AMD with 32 bit windows is a no no?

Not at all. AMD's 64-bit chips are quite comfortable in a 32-bit environment.

From my experience, running xp with a 64 bit processor doesnt make much of a difference than with a 32 bit processor

firewalker,

Were you running a 32-bit or 64-bit iteration of Windows?

UCLAri, would you recommand 32 or 64?

I'm rather impartial for my own needs, but I think that the long-term trends point to 64-bit. AMD's line has gone almost completely 64-bit, and the new Core 2 Duos are also 64-bit.

However, it may be years before consumer-side software really starts making 64-bit useful.

oh really?!?!
core 2 duos are 64?!?!
wow, then why would anyone bother with an AMD FX 64 x2 then? why not just go with intel core 2 duo

Ive run xp 32 bit on both 32 and 64 bit processors

not much of a difference

But xp-64 bit on a 64 bit processor is obviously going to have a performance increase

Get 64 bit. Whether you get a 32 bit chip or a 64 bit chip, it WILL have 32 bit support. However, 32 bit chip DON'T have 64 bit support. This will explain it a little better (perhaps in more detail than you need in some cases):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit

so
i shouldnt buy a core 2 duo? but get an AMD fx dual core instead?

It doesn't really matter at this point. Just make sure your other pieces of hardware are killer.

Hansen,

Core 2 duo IS a 64-bit enabled chip.

oh relly?
sweeeet
than core 2 duo really outdone AMD this time
